Still Here-The fic that I feared was leading me astray. CSI, Sara/Grissom.
Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
Way more fic than I had expected, not to mention more ficathons.
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January 2007?
I never thought I would write a CSI fic. Though I am obsessed with various shows and books, I have never really been inclined to write in any fandom other than Stargate. Even Atlantis, which makes my Sam and Ronon fic another surprise of the year. But what I never could have predicted is that I would produce so much genfic.
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
I really tried to push myself this year and I think that shows. Way more gen pieces. New het pairings. New genres. Each fic was an experiment in their own way, but String Theory most of all. I have written very few fics that deal with Sam and Jack’s relationship after that first moment of RST. I think I have claimed in the past that established relationship fics tend to be boring and far too heavy on the bunnies and babies side of things, but it seems clear to me now that I was just nervous that I could never pull it off. String Theory is my attempt to actually do that, to have a relationship that is established and real, something that follows the couple past the first kiss and into the real issues all couples have to deal with (and some most don’t have to, it’s the SGC after all. Lol.) Also, I tried a lot of different POVs, throwing in secondary characters to see if I could write them and do them justice and even threw in some original characters that I have been prettyobsessed happy with.
Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the New Year?
I would like to finish the darkfic I’ve had sitting in my unfinished folder for the last few years. Also, I would like to be brave enough to try my hand at smut. And take the time to revise my NaNo into an actual readable novel with proper research and everything.
My Best Story of the Year
Egeria’s Legacy will always mean a lot to me, as it’s pretty much my ode to Sam Carter, but that was really my best story of 2006, I just happened to get the final chapter worked out at the beginning of the year. For 2007…I would have to go with Revelations. This story is so unlike anything I have written before. A genfic from the POV of a minor character? Sure, apocafic is old hat for me by now, but Revelations really turned out to be a character piece, exploring Cassie and what it means to be an alien growing up on Earth, her relationships with SG-1, and her own resilience and ability to survive apocalyptic events and whether that is a curse or a gift. It was fascinating to write and took me places I never expected. In the end, I think it somehow managed to be a great story.
Story Most Under Appreciated by the Universe in My Opinion
I guess I would say Beneath the Stains of Time. I understand why it isn’t very popular. It’s not easy to read, both because it is emotionally rather dark, but also because of the inherent headache of time travel. It’s not short either. When I do get feedback on that story, I get so excited. It was such a labor of love (see hardest story to write, below).
Most Fun Story
Serendipity. I pretty much just let Jack and Sam run around crazy, all angst and seriousness completely abandoned. That story not only flirts with the ridiculous, but jumps in both feet first with a gleeful squee. It was endlessly fun to come up with the next even more ludicrous bit of plot or dialog. It’s always nice when you can crack yourself up as you’re writing. You should see the outtakes. Lol.
MostSexy Fluffy Story
Let’s just say I am not known for my sexy stories. I am also not known for my fluff, but I did do the [Bad username or site: “schmoop_age” @ livejournal.com] fic challenge. Ambient is probably the fluffiest thing I have ever written. Pretty much my ode to ‘what if Jack and Sam getting together wasn’t really difficult after all?’
Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters
Realignment completely changed Cam Mitchell for me. I had always liked him well enough, but he had never quite clicked for me. I think that was mostly because I hadn’t wrapped my mind around his character. Realignment was one of those stories where I don’t know how I really feel about a character or their place in the story until I have written something and looking back I have one of those “OH!” moments. Just another reason I think I meta much better in fic, because half the time I don’t even know how I feel about something until I almost subconsciously address it in a fic. Each story really is trying to say something, regardless of how successfully it is transmitted to the reader.
Hardest Story to Write
Beneath the Stains of Time. Hands down. I have clear memories of pacing back and forth in my family room, trying to work out the logistics of time travel and plot, mumbling to myself and having a lot of those ‘this makes logical sense, right?’ conversations with my husband (who knows nothing of the Stargate universe, but has an obsessive freak about fallacy and reason). Plus, once I had figured it out in my mind, I still had a small army of betas to convince.
I think this was just a story I really wanted to tell. I mean, apocafic is sort of my thing, right up there with angst, Jack POV, and Sam/Jack, all of which wormed into this fic. Plus, Jack and Vala became an obsession for me. I still can’t believe I finished it sometimes. Huge thanks to my betas, and to Jenn for hosting the ficathon.
Biggest Disappointment
Siren. I’ve been wanting to write this ‘Sam and Vala as space pirates’ fic for ages. The fates just seem aligned against it. Maybe one day? My one big ficathon failure of the year.
Biggest Surprise
String Theory. When I started that story, I never in a million years thought it would go on so long, or that so many people would actually want to read along with me. Every chapter of that story feels so self-indulgent that I am convinced I am the only one who would ever want to read it. I mean, for a Sam/Jack story, there is an awful lot of non-S/J things going on. But that is always the way I have preferred my Sam/Jack: nestled into a larger story and cast of characters. I am very pleasantly surprised to discover that I am not the only one!
Most Unintentionally Telling Story
Bwah! Every story is telling in their own way, no? Hmm…maybe I will just pick Ficlet #17 from String Theory and let people’s imaginations go wild. ;)
Revelations-Apocafic. Cassie and Jack.
