Epilogue

The sun was shining. It was a clear day, the soft breeze brushing up against Serenity as she sat steady on the planet’s surface, her docking bay doors thrown wide open to the spring air as they waited for the return of three of their crew.

River walked the length of the cargo bay, feeling the way her steps were different upon Serenity when she rested planetside, sure and solid, but without any give. Pausing behind Zoe and Inara, she listened as they seemed to speak quietly of grief and improbabilities and deeper mysteries without actually a word between them.

Nearer to the doors, River saw Kaylee, Sam, and Jayne sitting just outside the hold, sprawled in chairs as they soaked up the sun. Kaylee and Sam’s fingers twisted in the light as they discussed plans and theories and just-maybe-possibles, Jayne’s mouth wide open as he snoozed insensibly next to them.

Rising her hand against the blinding sun, River stared off to the next rise, feeling their approach before the first figure broke the horizon.

“They’re coming,” she said.

Sam pushed up out of her chair, Kaylee kicking Jayne into wakefulness.

“What?” Jayne demanded, his hands flying out on either side.

“Oh my,” Inara said, laughter in her voice as they all caught a glimpse of their returning shipmates.

Mal and Jack were head to toe covered in thick mud, while Vala strolled just in front of them, spotless with a satchel across her chest and a lacy parasol twisting above her head like a duchess.

“Dare I ask how the job went, sir?” Zoe said while Kaylee and Sam fought off laughter.

Mal and Jack looked at each other and simultaneously said, “What job?” as if they had previously agreed never to speak of it ever again.

Vala snapped her parasol shut, spinning it between her fingers like a baton. “You almost had to see it to believe it.”

“Vala,” Mal said, warning clear in his voice.

Vala glanced at him, nodding. “You’re right. This story is just too good to go for free.” She turned back to their audience, parasol tip down in front of her. “Do I hear any bids?”

Jayne and Kaylee were already scrambling for things to offer up for payment, Sam goading them on.

Jack threw Sam a look that she seemed to have no problem interpreting. She took a step back, hands raised in front of her. “Jack O’Neill, don’t you dare.”

But Jack didn’t seem to hear as he swept her up in a squelching hug, her feet actually lifting up off the ground for a moment. He rubbed his head against her cheek, leaving a long brown smudge on her pale skin.

“You are in so much trouble!” Sam said, voice rising near a shriek. River didn’t need the waves underneath to see the joy in her, nestled just below her bluster.

Jack laughed, darting a quick glance to River. “Totally worth it,” he said with a wink, almost like a secret between friends.

River smiled.

+++

The strangers lingered until they weren’t no more, and Serenity expanded and adjusted and found space for them. They filled a lot of the holes, even if the deeper cracks were still there—would always be there. But there were new sounds now, new waves rolling through the walls of Serenity.

Sam and Mal arguing, though mostly for sport now, as they each got an inordinate amount of amusement out of provoking the other. Vala saying everything but what she really meant, truth dolloped out like a tenuous trail of breadcrumbs, just waiting to see if anyone might ever pick up on it. Daniel did, but held it close to his chest, waiting to see where she landed.

And then there was Jack.

Jack was still a hum just quiet enough not to be heard, even by River. He was different than the others, something fundamental shifted in his base pairs. It had been a long time since River had to learn to know someone from the outside, from what they willingly gave and not what they hid. He scared her, at first, because maybe she couldn’t dig out his dark spaces, but she still saw the anger, the danger—Simon caught by the throat. Only then she saw the way his eyes followed his friends, heard the way his voice softened when he caught her following him.

“Hey, kid. You must be really bored to find me so interesting.”

She decided she liked the not knowing, having to guess what he might say or do, being wrong now and again. She hadn’t been allowed to be wrong for so long.

Mal was the one to suggest she teach Jack to fly Serenity. “He’s one hell of a pilot,” Mal had said, waves of reluctant respect and nascent trust emanating off him.

When she was up on deck with Jack as her co-pilot, it was quiet. Nothing to obscure the sound of Serenity, the soft hum of things being right and steady and full. She thought Jack might just appreciate the silence too.

She couldn’t be sure though.

She liked that.

It bears repeating just how much I LOVE the open ending, and love the tentative friendship between Jack and River. A lot. I think they would get along very well and be amusing, to boot.

Thank you so much for writing this and then surprising me! Makes me so happy.

I think people should take the open ending and run! What exactly would happen if Jayne and Daniel ever had to spend prolonged hours with each other? Sam and Inara? Man, so many possibilities left to imagine. ;)

Thank you for being so darn patient! I'm so sorry I made you wait so long.

This entire fic is just so wonderful! You have kept SG-1 still the characters we know so well, but changed by their experiences. And integrated them with Firefly - in a truly natural way to the story.

I kept refreshing, hoping you would be able to finish posting all 9 parts this evening.

Thanks!

Thank you! It's sort of fun to imagine all the ways you could match up various characters from each show and guess what they might say to each other. :) So glad you enjoyed it!

Oh, thanks for posting all of this at once! Really, I have to get up at 3:30am to catch a flight, so I shouldn't be reading, but I couldn't stop. I'm totally blaming you when I fall asleep in meetings tomorrow.

Wonderful story- I love that you left it out there- do they go home? Will they ever see Teal'c?

You know, of course, that this is a possible series...hint hint...Although I must say you have some other series to work through too (and that I'm waiting for patiently (not). No pressure, of course-LOL.

The whole story just made me go "gah". Sam being tortured, but following through so bravely (and Jack-like). Mal being insulted that he wasn't torture-worthy.

And Jack and Daniel and crew to the rescue! Seriously cool! I think I will be taking your advice and diving into the Serenity Universe- the characters look fascinating. Thanks for letting me in on it-

Whoops! Hope the meeting went well. :) I just couldn't bring myself to strand them there forever, or send them home, so I just decided to leave it ambiguous. Maybe they will hang out long enough for Sam to learn some of their better technology so Sam and Jack can barter their way back into Earth's good graces again (and maybe stay out of jail). Who knows? Heh.

Although I must say you have some other series to work through too

Oy, don't I know it. I managed to get one looming project off my to do pile, but now there's just more! Meep!

Let me know how you like Firefly! I love it to pieces. :)

Thanks!

Spam at any time is more than welcome. In fact, it's encouraged. PLEASE TO BE SPAMMING MORE IN THE FUTURE.

This was an absolutely wonderful story. I'm very impressed with how well you melded these two 'verses and kept all of the characters true to themselves. And as much as I miss Teal'c, I love how they ended up staying - I think I might have shed a tear if SG-1 had decided to return to Earth.

My favorite parts of this would have to be, without a doubt, the Sam-Mal interactions and the Jack-River interactions. So perfect.

Thank you for posting this ♥

Hahah. I'll keep that in mind. As long as it's fic, I can spam all I like. ;)

Thank you! The Sam and Mal antagonism just blossomed from the first moment. (I remember writing their first scene and being kind of surprised by how much they annoyed each other, but it just made sense.) Jack and River, on the other hand, totally surprised me, but Jack's thing with kids and misfits, it just seemed to work. I'm so glad you liked it too!

Oh wow. wow, wow, wow. Loved it! And such a satisfying ending too! Closure but with a great open end as the groups learn to deal with one another and begin to fill lost spaces. Jack and River's interactions were an unexpected delight. Mal and Sam's banter back and forth was also lots of fun! Excellent work in capturing all the characters and getting them to play on the same stage. Thanks for posting all of it at once! It was an absolutely enjoyable read!

HOLY CRAP this was good!!! I am not a crossover fan, I'll admit it, but you pulled this off quite nicely. My only thought on the ending is, if they ever get home, Teal'c may throttle one of them for leaving him behind so abruptly.
Very nice blending of the various points of view and the personalities. Makes me want to watch Firefly....

Congratulations on getting this finished and thanks for posting all the parts so promptly! Loved it!!

That was just awesome. Though I have that reaction after most of your stories.

I have yet to see Firefly, but after this I will try to do my best to get a copy of the episodes.

I loved that the true nature of our SG1 characters were still under all the change. And the Jack/Sam relationship was very nicely portrayed. Made my shippy heart beat faster.

But still, if Teal'c does ever find them, there's going to be hell to pay.

Loved it!!

I loved it every bit as much as I thought I would.

I'm glad that you decided to integrate our SG-1 into Serenity's crew. It fits wonderfully, and creates quite a lovely universe. I will feverently hope that you will continue writing stories in this 'verse, although I can see how you might want to leave this as a stand-alone. It works that way, too.

As I said before, you captured everyone's personalities so well. You got SG-1 down, and you kept them to character even as you had to change their personalities to fit their experiences. You very much found River's voice and I applaud you for that as she's such a difficult character to represent.

Thank you again for quite a lovely time!

Thank you! I must admit, I did leave it a little open ended because I would love to write more. Then again, my track record with sequels is not so good. Lol. I'm so glad to hear you liked my River. She's such an interesting character, but hard to capture. Intimidating! :)

I really loved this story - you blended the two 'verses nicely, your characters felt real, and the dialogue was suitably Firefly-esque. Any chance of a sequel?

Thank you! As for sequels...never say never. Though I have to warn that my muse is really perverse. Lol. It might take another two years. ;)

Oh, I loved this Series. I've only caught glimpses of Firefly on Cable but will definitely try and catch up after reading this. Love the way you portrayed Sam, Jack, Daniel & Vala. Although I don't know the crew of Serenity the glimpse you gave of the characters is enough to whet my appetite for more. Thanks very much.

This story makes me happy on so many levels I couldn't even begin to articulate them all. Just . . . Sam and Jack being so them. Daniel! Vala! Your characterizations of both families are so dead-on. And I love the way you weave the SG-1 gang into Serenity's crew and leave them there at the end, having adventures and moving forward.

Just . . . YAY!

Thank you! I was so happy when Trout gave me the prompt of Jack and Sam undercover together, because I thought it would be a great chance to see them when they are out of their normal power structures, not to mention out of their depth a bit. I'm glad the Firefly crew read all right as this was my first attempt at them (man, the stylized dialog alone scared the crap out of me!)

Thanks! :)

This was fabulous! I love how you integrated everyone, how you kept Sam & Jack's emotional tangle, and how everyone is settling into an expanded family! (Now they just have to figure out how to get back to our galaxy & see Teal'c. There's more than one galaxy in which to be space pirates, after all!)

This may just be my favourite AU ever - feel free to spam me any time as long as there is a story attached! This was really wonderful; with the little touches of humour and the underlying anguish and the wonderful ending. Of course they couldn't go home, but I do love the idea that Teal'c is back there, steadily keeping it all on track...

If ever you feel like revisiting this universe, I'll be right there in line to read whatever snippets you have for us. Thank you!

Haha! You may come to regret that! ;) Honestly, I vacillated back and forth with ending with them going home or stranding them permanently (I have about four different endings drafted), but in the end I decided they would stay with intentions of going home someday soon. Vague, I know, but hopefully not annoying! :)

Thank you so much!

Oh my. Oh WOW!

You do realise that I had *sworn* that I was going to get an early night tonight? So much for that idea!

This was just superb; characters, joy, plot everything. It's definitely going into my recs!!

ETD: One question though...The strangers lingered until they weren’t no more, and Serenity expanded and adjusted and found space for them. That last bit sort of implies that they stayed on - did I miss something where their puddlejumper got trashed? I'd have thought they'd head straight back, if only to relieve T's mind. Perhaps I misunderstood?

Whoops! Sorry to sleep deprive you! ;) Thank you so much!

As for the ending, I leave it a bit vague as they do linger for a while, even though the puddle jumper works fine (though the thought of being locked in two small rooms with Vala and Daniel as well as Sam for five solid weeks in the vacuum of space between out galaxies might have made Jack a bit less eager ;) Sam is still fulfilling her promise, integrating the new tech into Serenity which would take a long while. Also there is the outstanding issue of the fact that Jack and Sam may not be able to go back to Earth, as they burned their bridges rather well when they went rogue against direct orders. But I can't stand the thought of them never seeing Teal'c again, so...someday.

I really enjoyed how you integrated the SG-1 team into the Firefly 'verse believably. The adventure was nice as was the tension and the bits of romance. It opened up a very large AU universe to play in if the Ancients populated it with bits of theit technology that no one could use.

Vala felt a bit off but the rest of the characterizations were very well done. And you always know how to write Jack and Sam well! :)

I'm not quite sure I believe that they'd stay. They've always wanted to get home in the past, regardless of where they were stranded.

I very much enjoyed Jack's interactions with River. (second to the S/J, of course! LOL) I love that she couldn't read him as easily as everyone else. It's believable that she'd gravitate to him as he's something new and shiny for her. And she can be deceptively simple and so can Jack. That they clicked was very enjoyable:)

Thank you so much!

As for them staying for a while, as I addressed in an above comment, Jack and Sam are technically awol and wanted and various other nasty things back on Earth, not to mention they've earned a little breathing time as some very unpleasant things have happened to them over the last six months. Plus, five weeks locked in a jumper with Vala and Daniel with nowhere to escape? Lol.

Vala was a bit tricky because this was early season nine Vala, who has zero reason to trust SG-1, and has suffered an extended period of torture (and psychological torture) at the hands of the Illuminati, so she's a little dented, way cynical, and not willing to be weak enough to trust anyone, no matter how tempting.

Yeah, I was surprised by the Jack and River stuff, but it just seemed right, so I went with it. Plus, Jack has that whole soft spot about kids and misfits...

Thanks!
