The Questions

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
Well, considering I posted about 130,000 fannish words this year (not counting the 50,000 NaNo words), I would say that I wrote a lot more than I thought I would. I finished up some enormous projects this year, even if I sort of ignored a few others. (I’m sorry!)

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January 2007?

My Leverage fic came from nowhere. A last second pitch-hit that exploded into Leverage zombie fic. Lol. Even more surprising in that I think it has easily become my number one most popular fic. I did not see that coming. One of these days I am going to write part two: The Flamethrower Job.

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
I think my biggest risk this year was the first fic of the year: Roanoke. I doubt a dozen people even read this fic let alone understood it, and maybe it’s a failure from that point of view, but I learned a lot from writing it, and revising it, and even from the lukewarm reaction. It was my first attempt at horror/mystery as a genre and turned into a real mood piece where the setting was more the main character than anyone else. So, maybe a failure, but it did give me the courage to really step outside the fandom and genre and I sorta think my original novel in progress at the moment never would have made it out of my giant pile of ‘what ifs’ without it.

Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the New Year?
Writing Goals of 2010 list to follow so I can torture myself with it all year long. No, really, it’s fun to have a list to check things off of. Very satisfying.

My Best Story of the Year
I think I would have to go with The Raggedy Edge. It so easily could have been a disaster, crossing over two incongruous fandoms like SG-1 and Firefly. Not to mention the inherent problems of trying to write dialog for the Firefly crowd, let alone their point of views. Plus, it was insanely gratifying to have struggled with it for years and finally get it done. And surprising Trout with it out of the blue was so much fun. I still can’t believe I never let it slip to her. I think I eventually just refused to go on IM. Snerk.

Story Most Under Appreciated by the Universe in My Opinion
The Sleeping Warrior. Hands down. Not that it is so brilliant or anything, but people always complain about a lack of Teal’c fic, especially Teal’c het fic, including me. And yet, I think for all our complaining, not many us are actually that interested in reading a Teal’c fic either way. I hope I’m wrong, cause that’s sad.

Most Fun Story
The Chainsaw Job. I was so worried to even attempt the characters from Leverage, but then Eliot just started complaining in my head and everything just unspooled from there. (Is it time for Leverage to start airing again yet? How about now?)

Most Sexy Story
Uh…man. I am still really not a smut writer. I leave that to the hands of those much more skilled than myself. (Oy. I did not mean it like that.)

Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters
This was the year that Ishta finally crystallized in my mind between The Sleeping Warrior and one scene in Down Here Among the Wreckage. I began to reconcile who she is and what role she might really play in Teal’c’s life and Jaffa culture in general. I also had a lot of fun with Cassie and Vala in Surrogate—two characters that seemingly should have nothing in common, but somehow really work together. Throwing them together in tight quarters (and physically making it impossible for Cassie to run away) just to see what might happen was a fun experiment. Who should we lock up together next?

Biggest Disappointment
Roanoke. Just didn’t quite pull it off, I think. I also wish I had gotten A LOT more done on Down Here Among the Wreckage.

And to finish off, time to take a second look at last year’s writing goals. How did I do?

Writing Goals from January 2009

1. Sweet Charity Fic. Check!
The Raggedy Edge (Sam/Jack)
SO happy to have this one done. You have no idea.

2. Down Here Among the Wreckage. Check!
I know, I didn’t finish this, but I did write all of part two. So that’s something, right?

3. Unnamed Day of Indulgence Fic. Check!
The Short Straw (Sam/Jack)
Sure, I originally had a different fic planned for this challenge, but a fic is a fic!

4. Escape Velocity. FAIL
Nope. This Evan Lorne fic that is quasi-sequel to ‘Gravity Always Wins in the End’ is still sitting ignored on my hard drive, not a single word added. Poor fic.

5. DC Series. Check!

Well, I am certainly not ready to say I am done with this series, but I think I earned a check, having written four installments this year.

6. galpalficathon entry. Check!
Surrogate (Cassie and Vala friendship)

7. Sequel to a certain fic that shall remain nameless. FAIL
This one is still floating around, but far too many other fics appeared from nowhere so I was way too distracted this year.

8. Unnamed ‘Unending’ Tag. FAIL
Yeah, this fic is still sitting around looking pathetic. Whoops. I think it has a title now though!

9. Unnamed Teal’c Fic. FAIL
Ha. I almost forgot about this one. It’s still there, even though it has morphed into something else entirely that I did not expect. Maybe I will get to this one someday?

10. That Persistent Original Fic Idea. Check!
Nano 2009, baby.

11. Revise NaNo 2007. FAIL
Hahahahahahah. Ahahahah. Yeah. I think I have given up on that one. Who knew writing historical fiction would be so excruciating?

12. sg_rarepairings ficathon. FAIL
Yet again was forced to just watch pathetically from the sidelines, pouting all the way. Though, not completely my fault as the ficathon happened even later than usual, coinciding with NaNo. Maybe next year?

Eeesh. Six of twelve. Not so impressive. But let’s look ahead, not behind. ;)

HAPPY NEW YEAR and welcome back to the internetz! ::glomps on::

:::looks at the loooong list above::: Thanks for all the joy you've given me this past year, especially the DC Series and The Raggedy Edge. Comfort fic, both. Anytime you want to throw Cass and Vala back in a room, please do.

7. Sequel to a certain fic that shall remain nameless. FAIL

Yeah, Daniel, Jacob and I would like to discuss this with you. *g*

All in all, a very good year. May you meet all your writing goals in 2010.

The internets are so shiny! I missed them! Thank goodness for texts. Lol.

I fear that if Vala and Cassie spent too much time together, they might run off and become space pirates. And Sam would be so sad to be left out!

I will have to write up my goals for this year. Hmmm. *digs through WIP file*

I have ONE more Firefly ep to watch and then I can read the x-over fic!

*doing happy dance*

I admit, I could have watched them faster but decided to savor...since there are no more. :(

I don't blame you! You should savor them. I take it you already saw the film? Oh, Firefly. I am fairly certain I will never forgive FOX for that. Bastards.

Yep, saw the film. That's what made me willing to give Firefly another chance, the first time I tried to watch my head was still too much into Buffy. Although I did find Calum verrrry attractive. ;)

Haha. And on Angel too. But Zoe is so trustworthy! How can she be evil?

Really interesting to read your thoughts on your fic for 2009. It's got me thinking about my own fic...can I steal the questions? :)

I loved your Teal'c fic but I agree; I think people complain there isn't enough but generally don't want to read it. Which is sad.

Oh...and Happy New Year! Good luck with the 2010 fic goals. :)

Of course! Feel free to snag questions. I stole them from someone else a few years ago. :)

Poor Teal'c.

Happy New Year to you as well! I hope it is productive for us both!

I appreciate that as a writer you must review the goals you set yourself, but I just wanted to say thank you for all the wonderful stories you did last year.

I looked forward to everyone of them with gleeful anticipation and was not disappointed. The were exceptional as usual.

I still think you're one of the best out there.

Here's to a ficful 2010. :)

I think six out of twelve is pretty impressive, myself. *grins*
