So, here's the thing. It's not a secret that I was not happy with the Peter not knowing that Alt!Olivia was not the right Olivia. And I was a little upset that Fringe, who had seemed so revolutionary in other ways (even the conception of giving us an alternate world just as nuanced and sympathetic as as own), was being sort of trite and predictable with the Peter/Olivia/Alt!Olivia triangle. Now, I have to admit that a lot of my trepidation was that after some good progress towards Peter/Olivia (the kiss, the 'you belong with me', the Olivia using him as a touchstone on the other side), I was scared that the show was going to use the Peter/Alt!Olivia stuff as an excuse to hit the reset button, shove the ship back into the recesses, and buy some more time on the UST meter (like, say, eight seasons. lol). So color me surprised when Fringe didn't drop all the ship like a hot potato after giving Olivia her chance to express her thoughts at the end of 'Marionette'. Instead, they seemed to be making small nuanced steps, keeping the ship alive, but not moving it too fast, really giving respect for the consequences and confusions that have arisen out of the situation. I liked the little things like the book, Olivia reading Alt!Olivia's files. Peter and Olivia slowly feeling each other out and learning to work together. Forgiveness in steps and sputters. Genuine.
That being said... At the beginning of 'Concentrate and Ask Him Again' those were my thoughts, happily optimistic. By the time we got to the coffee I was like, "stop beating a dead horse." And by the end of the ep? Really? You're going to make Peter and Olivia's love DETERMINE THE FATE OF THE UNIVERSE? REALLY? I just... I can't decide if that is A) pure ridiculousness, B) badfic on my teevee screen, or C) (because I am big enough to admit that I have been wrong before) will somehow turn out to be genius, or at least enjoyable TV. (Please please please let it be enjoyable TV.)
Thoughts, oh wise flist?

That said...Alias did turn out okay. It took five years and TWO really obnoxious fake outs...but it did work out. So, maybe? I don't know. Mostly I just watch "Jacksonville" a lot and pretend that was the series finale.

The show runners spent the whole first season laying the groundwork for season 2 and beyond, so I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt. (and really, would Olivia sit back and wait for Peter to decide? The woman who broke out of prison how many times on the other side and never waits for backup or rescue?)
Peter and Olivia slowly feeling each other out and learning to work together. Forgiveness in steps and sputters. Genuine.
This. I love this. Grown ups acting like grown ups, and a real character building period for Olivia (and Peter, to a point) with all that self-doubt... the tipping point between being dragged along by strange events and taking the bull by the horns.
But in case you need a little reassurance, a rec:

And nice little fic snippet. Heh. Thanks for the link.

I just finished watching that ep and I was thinking the same thing.
This show has been pretty good about taking things that don't seem like good ideas and making them work. So I'm cautiously optimistic.

And I was torn between kind of liking the Olivia and Nina scene and thinking it was way out of character for her to be spilling such intimate details to another person. I'm also slightly bothered that it's turning into this melodrama with everyone tiptoeing around her about Fauxlivia and Peter and not really addressing the bigger issues of the trauma of torture etc. Can someone also just tell her - "you are better than her because you don't kill innocent people?" How did people forget that?
So...I have tentative hope they will pull this off but I swear if Fauxlivia ends up pregnant, I am throwing my remote at the TV.

I hadn't considered the pregnancy angle.

DO NOT EVEN THINK THE 'P' WORD, BEAN. I will know who to blame!
