At least his name isn't Jack.

Okay, guys. So here's the thing. I have been streaming TV off netflix like crazy and I have just discovered Medium. HOW DID I NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS SHOW? I just... Allison and Joe are like my favorite TV married couple of all time. Up there with Coach and Mrs. Coach, and Jed and Abbey, and I can't even think of any others because how often do you get to see awesomesauce established relationships on TV? Ones not laden with cliche and forced melodrama and stupid misunderstandings (so far)? How often do you get a functioning couple that still makes me squee like an idiot over them like the greatest OTP ever? NEVER, that's how often. (Plus, Allison looks like a normal mother, you know, real. Like she actually gave birth to three kids. At least so far. I hope they don't glam her up later.)

Season 2's 'Twice Upon a Time' and season 3's 'The One Behind The Wheel' kill my shipper heart dead. I want a Joe of my very own. (God, the snark! the logic! the hair!) Though a very very close second is any episode where the girls get involved with visions or, you know, stealing cable. LOVE.

And I have only just finished season three. If you spoil me in any way for anything I will...I dunno. Do something mean. Like think not kind thoughts about you. Just so you know. Lol. (And yes, I consider, "Oh, the show goes so downhill after season four," or "I wish so and so character hadn't been written out" spoilers. I'm the freak who doesn't like to watch the 'Next Time' promos. I do know it has been cancelled, but I like closed canons. Much less anxiety.)

So who are your favorite on-screen married couples? Can you think of any? :)

I really like Marshall and Lily on How I Met Your Mother. i agree it's definitely rare to see married/established couples done well on tv. it's actually one of the reasons i like that show so much... i really enjoy the Marshall and Lily dynamic.

and it sounds like I should check out medium - thanks for the recommendation! :)

I never got into that show despite hearing how awesome it is. Someday! I'm really, really enjoying Medium.

I only ever watched in Korea, so I don't even know what season it was...but I will say I often end up coveting their sheet sets. They have some nice bedding.

Um...the Kings on Road to Avonlea, Jed and Abby, of course, um...Sully and Dr. Mike did get married eventually, and...man, TV doesn't have a lot of married couples.

[identity profile] annerbhp.livejournal.com 2011-06-15 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha. Yeah. I envy the sheets, and the pillow talk. Lol.

Oh man, Dr. Quinn. I used to love that show. Hee!

DS9's O'Brien and Keiko. (and how sad is it that the only shows I remember watching are sci-fi? I need to diversify...)

[identity profile] annerbhp.livejournal.com 2011-06-15 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Good old O'Brien and Keiko. Though they did have stupid drama on TNG didn't they. Lol. I remember that marriage ep. They were so cute though. Love.

Diversification is over-rated. ;)

Yeah, Trek was always good for the broad strokes, but when it came to the personal, they dropped the ball so many times.

I've only seen a handful of medium, so I couldn't spoil you on much. (What I do know, I won't tell.) I thought he was incredibly supportive in the shows I saw.

I haven't watched it, but I'm told by Christian friends that the agent on White Collar has a solid marriage. Parenthood has a couple that are solid. My best recollection beyond that is old sitcoms, strangely enough - Cosby show, Brady Bunch, Ozzie & Harriet, Father Knows Best, The Donna Reed Show, Leave It To Beaver and My Three Sons (later seasons when Steve married Dodie's mom played by Beverly Garland). Although there were, in fact, often stupid misunderstandings, mostly the *marriages* were not the focus of that.

Oh, and Picard-Crusher on ST:TNG. There were SO an old married couple. ;p (I don't count Vash since she ran off with Q any way.)

[identity profile] annerbhp.livejournal.com 2011-06-15 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yes! Peter and Elizabeth. That is another great relationship. They are too cute for words.

I have problems with the older shows because the relationships are still so stereotyped and the women tend to be somewhat marginalized. (Not Mrs. Cosby though, from what I remember.)

Haha! Picard and Crusher. So an old married couple. :)

Sandy and Kirsten during early seasons of The O.C.

When you say Coach and Mrs. Coach, you're talking about Friday Night Lights?

[identity profile] annerbhp.livejournal.com 2011-06-15 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Never saw the OC. I was under the impression that was sort of a teen soap/drama, so I'm impressed if they had a good functioning adult marriage in there!

And yeah, I mean Eric and Tami Taylor. LOVE THEM.

Oh I agree about the White Collar couple as for married couples today. They're very sweet.

Joe and Allison are my favorite married couple of all time.

Going real old school, I loved the Harts, from Hart to Hart.

And...I'm too braindead to think of more right now.

[identity profile] annerbhp.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
I doubt it's brain dead as much as tv making people's conviction that established relationships can't work without a hell of a lot of melodrama. ;)

[identity profile] dimizo.livejournal.com 2011-06-15 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Medium is awesome, and I've always loved the Allison/Joe dynamic. I love the way they discuss everything, even the most bizarre & horrible things happening with Allison's abilities, and I love Joe's down to earth assessment's. So sad that the series has been cancelled but we still haven't seen the last season in Australia so we have that to look forwad to. Certainly up to what I have seen the characters remain true and real and very watchable. Keep on enjoying! I'm having trouble thinking of a current married couple in a series, sorry.

[identity profile] annerbhp.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
They are both so great. And he's like her number one fan even as he grounds her. And they way they are with the kids, both of them, together. It's so great!

Kara Thrace and Sam Anders. Amy and Rory Pond. Grace and Henry Deacon (though I think Grace may go by her maiden name, I don't remember).

*is predictable*

[identity profile] annerbhp.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
Ha! Do you ever get the feeling you aren't watching the same show other people are? I do, all the time. :)

Allison and Joe are awesome. I have rhapsodized about them in my LJ at least once. It's the most realistic marriage I can ever recall seeing on TV. I LOVE that even when they fight, you always know they'll be okay. For that matter, I love that they fight. The kids generally act their ages, too.

I only watch Medium in season-long bursts, and I'm a season behind ATM, but I'll get back to it sometime and love them all over again.

[identity profile] annerbhp.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
It's so well done that I'm sort of amazed I never got around to watching it until now. Because now I want how Allison and Joe met fic. And how Joe begins to notice his new girlfriend will never spend the night fic. I am doomed.

[identity profile] lanna-kitty.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
Brenda and Fritz on The Closer. I think they're very real. They have issues and they fight, but there is a lot of giving and acceptance that "my spouse is an obsessive workaholic", and he pushes back when it's important.

Zoe and Wash -firefly :(

Angela and Hodgens - Bones

[identity profile] annerbhp.livejournal.com 2011-06-23 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
The Closer is definitely another show I have lined up to watch some day soon.

Sadly, as much as I love them, I don't think Zoe and Wash or Angela and Hodgens count as functioning marriages with cliches or melodrama or misunderstandings. Though they both have their high points. :)

[identity profile] lanna-kitty.livejournal.com 2011-06-23 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey you were the one asking for favorite on-screen married couples, not specifically ones saddled with epic tv melodrama ;)

I like Wash and Zoe precisely because they didn't have the epic TV melodrama. I know many couples just like them and it was refreshing to see on tv because there wasn't tons of Angst.

this past season of Bones, I thought Hodgens and Angela was also pretty decent. They're actually the couple I prefer to watch. they're offbeat and they had some heavy stuff - granted it was in the typical bones style of "we all really know what's going to happen" drama, but there were some good moments of working stuff out.

Wash and Zoe on Firefly are totally my favorite ever tv married couple (we won't talk about the movie).

I...think there must be others. But they are incredibly rare.

[identity profile] meoinya.livejournal.com 2011-06-18 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
Yep I agree. Loved Wash and Zoe.

Dating myself a bit, I really loved Scarecrow and Mrs. King... but they didn't get married until the end of the series.

[identity profile] annerbhp.livejournal.com 2011-06-23 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, Zoe and Wash. If only we could have seen more. Love them.

On-screen married couples! I love them all, because established relationships are totally my happy place . . . :)

But as for currently on the air, Covert Affairs, Joan and Arthur, who work together and fight like hell and make sense to me as a married couple that has to struggle with very weird power dynamics.

[identity profile] annerbhp.livejournal.com 2011-06-23 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I wasn't sure about Joan and Arthur at first, if they were going to go down the stale "he's cheating" path or not, but I think they have settled in to potential at least. :)

[identity profile] lastingdreams8.livejournal.com 2011-06-16 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Joe and Allison are definitely very functional and have amazing chemistry on-screen. I can definitely see why they are squee-worthy :D

I love them so much! But Joe just cut his hair. WOE!

I have none that haven't been mentioned, but there can always be more!

I haven't really watched Medium, but I've heard similar things about love for that relationship.

[identity profile] annerbhp.livejournal.com 2011-06-23 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I think you should give Medium a go. And not just because I am obsessed with it. :D
