And I even managed to stay completely spoiler free!  Thanks for everyone being so cool about it.  And definitely don't read below the cut if you don't want to be spoiled!

So many excellent secondary characters! Walter! Davis! Siler! And just another moment in time in the SGC! What a great way to kick it off.

Sam, Cam, and Daniel kick ass. (how soon until we get stranded in the Arctic Circle OT3?) How painful was their total helplessness when they get separated? Mitchell doesn’t exist, Sam is a dead famous person, Daniel is a crackpot. (God, the picture on the back of his book. LOL.)

Yay! All the Goa’uld reassembled!  How fun is it to see them all again? Nirrti! Yu! And Camulus is still a petulant jerk!  *cheer*

Qetesh is a complete bad ass. LOVE her. Best Goa’uld EVER. (and as a side note, thanks for letting Ba’al go out as the sinister creep he was always meant to be, not the joke he had become in later seasons.)

Sam flying!!! WOOT!  She is so damn kick ass it’s not even funny. (Plus, just HOT in this movie. No, I am not shallow.)

God, how snarkilicious is Daniel? I just love it. Swapping insults with the Russian kid (“Are there any adults around?”) Calling himself to give a pep talk? Classic, WONDERFUL Daniel.

And then there’s Jack…  I really wanted to be fair to him, but he was what I most feared about this movie.  And unfortunately my fears were pretty well founded.  He’s always been my favorite character, so I’m way harder on him, but please.  I want intense, gritty, intelligent, but likes to hide it behind snarky flippant remarks Jack.  What I got was Doofus Jack.  Le Sigh.  (except that one moment with Daniel about Charlie. Now *there* was my Jack O’Neill.  Nice.) Sorta felt like he didn’t really need to be in the movie though, as sad as that makes me feel.

Overall, Continuum is very, very awesome. But I still can’t help feeling a little….I dunno, cheated at the reset at the end, no matter how much I expected it.  I’d like to see at least a little consequence, or what’s the point?

Still a fantastic movie that felt more feature-like rather than just two long episodes slapped together. (Plus, Daniel saying, “Shit” and Sam swearing were just bonus. Yay cussing!! ;)  No gratuitus overuse of special affects or budget that dragged me out of the movie like The Ark of Truth.  Continuum is an almost seamless movie that sucks you in so fast that you won’t want to pause even for a bathroom break.  I sure didn’t.

It’s way obvious to me now which writers have a vested interest in the *characters* rather than just the franchise.  The characters were the stars of this show. Uttterly heart-breaking, lovely, insightful moments I will want to watch over and over again.

In case you were wondering, yes, my ship goggles served me just fine. (A death scene! Sam being all distracted and completely choked up by Jack’s death! Sam buying FRUIT LOOPS. Lol. I believe I actually said to my TV at one point. “At least half of my OTP is AWESOMESAUCE.”)

Now off to watch the special features.

I was spoiled for three things: time travel, Jack, and someone in the Arctic/Antarctic. Not too bad, considering.

I personally thought Colonel Jack was spectacular, even if General Jack made me roll his eyes. And I very much liked the subtle shippiness - easy enough for gen fans to ignore, easy enough for ship fans to embrace.

Qetesh was too awesome for words. I wish we could've had Qetesh for S9-10 instead of Vala.

All in all, this is oodles better than AoT, and a fantastic continuation to the franchise.

::hugs fandom::

why yes, I did just finish watching and typing up my reactions! Why do you ask? ;)

Yes. Not blatantly obvious, but those little moments where your hopelessly romantic side went "Awww, I love my OTP!" They didn't hit you with it across the head, but if you were looking, there were little gems scattered throughout the movie. :)

Aw, it makes me sad that you don't like Vala. I think she's great. Of course, I would also *love* to see more Qetesh. Just, WOW. The more I think about the movie, the more I am blown away by everyone's performances. Everyone from Landry to Daniel just....stunning. (except Jack, sorry RDA)

I think I didn't even realize all the problems I had with AoT until I saw this and just how much better it is.

All in all, a joyous day for fandom. Squee!

My big problem with Vala is marrying the backstory of her behavior in S8-9 with the character we're supposed to accept as a friend and member of SG-1 in S10. I can't forget that she left Hammond and Walter and SG-3 to die, that she forced Daniel to wear bracelets she knew would kill him, that she harrassed him repeatedly (reverse the genders, and it's seriously appalling)... Subsequent sacrifice doesn't erase it.

But I have always had problems with Vala's character, not with CB, and WOW was Qetesh amazing!

And I liked Colonel Jack a lot, so I'm using my Jack icon. ;)

I liked Jack. I especially liked AU Jack, but . . . our Jack got serious when he needed to, and that worked for me.

And yes, nice subtle shippiness! And the fruit loops! Hee!

But mostly, this was Sam and Cam's story, and it was an absolutely heartbreaking one. So lovely, so wonderful. I said more over on my journal when I finished watching, but I can sum it up pretty much with: oh, my TEAM!. :)

Really? Wow. Maybe I need to watch Jack again. Although, I do get that I am his worst critic because the character means so damn much to me.

The shippiness was great. Anymore than that, and I fear we would wander into the Threads realm. *shudder*

I didn't think it would be possible to love Sam, Cam, or Daniel even more than I already do, but damm, this movie did that. :)

Re: Jack.

No, as soon as he started making guest appearances after Season 7, I thought he was going downhill. One of the writers, or directors, or someone - I'm horrible with names - did an interview and said that RDA was the hardest to deal with/write for, because he wanted every line he said to be humorous. I wasn't very happy with him or his acting, but the 'shipper moments were worth having him there.

posted by [identity profile] annerbhp.livejournal.com at 02:41am on 30/07/2008
I know. It's so damn sad. I think RDA is tough because he never stuck to lines, but that almost made him better, because he was into it and having fun, but I just feel like he's forgotten who Jack O'Neill is as a character. Except as Colonel Jack in this movie. That was pretty great. (How sad is it that I am actually relieved he wasn't in it more?)

posted by [identity profile] soapbox-solo38.livejournal.com at 03:07am on 30/07/2008
(Trust me, you're probably part of the majority in that. I wince every time I see him come onscreen, now.) I tried to make excuses for how badly RDA's gotten off-track with Jack's portrayals, but there can't be a good reason for letting go of all those years of character development, and holding onto all that character downfall!

Possibly the only other time I thought RDA was actually showing us the Jack we know and love (other than the Colonel bits, and he called Sam ma'am (it's going to take me a bit before I can think of that and not laugh)) was when he lay dying and told his team to "get to the Gate." (And that's what's truly sad, here.)

I agree! Mostly. As I just finished, I'm still processing my feelings for the overwhelming greatness...and starting to go through that stages of grief that there isn't anymore to watch. Not even Sam on Atlantis. *deep sigh*

And I was all gleeful at the ship. All the wonderful glances and the heartbreak-i-ness of it! Though seriously, I think these movies need fic warnings cause I so wasn't prepared for character death(s). But my fangirl self just squeed through all the Sam/Jack scenes.

Hey, keep those fingers crossed for a third movie. :)

Yes, I had prepared myself for no ship, because there was so much complaining here and there, but that was the perfect amount for me, thank you very much. Squee!

I was mostly unspoiled, but my teenage daughter sitting next to me,not so much. And she would mention things as they were happening. Needing to be beaten, she is.

I loved loved loved it. Even with silly time machines, and not enough Jack, and time lines that aren't exactly the same anymore...or where they wrong before, and correct this time? Still lots of Sam/Jack lovely little ship moments for me, me me!

And Teal'c FTW, and everything!

Oy. Just another reason I prefer to watch these things completely by myself. Lol. I would have locked her in a room somewhere.

I just loved the scope of the whole thing, the time they took with it for wonderful character moments...just stunning. I am a happy fangirl today.

Oh yeah, it was a great movie! And I agree. The only Jack that I liked in this movie was Colonel Jack. *sigh* I wish we had Colonel Jack more often.

And the ship! I saw some S/J and S/D and even a little S/C. lol I am so hopeless sometimes. :)

posted by [identity profile] annerbhp.livejournal.com at 03:00am on 30/07/2008
Yeah, Colonel Jack was nice. Sigh.

There was a lot of fertile ground for shippiness, wasn't there! It was just so clear that they all cared about each other so. damn. much. Such a joy to watch. :)

Yay, I totally want you to so I am very happy! I NEED to know what happened that year that Sam's alone... and there was that spark she had with Jack and he looked so intrigued but then she was all crazy so he stayed away... and then maybe she can't even get in touch with him because it's against her non-disclosure agreement.

I need to stop bouncing.

Brad Wright is my favorite SG1 writer, he always writes amazing character-driven stories, so I didn't expect anything less from the movie. But I was a little disappointed by Jack, too. I was left with the impression he's going to have more screen time and more important role... Even though Jack in the Arctic was great. And the dying scene was very good, too.

Best Goa’uld EVER.
Absolutely!! :)

I don't think I ever really paid attention to who wrote what, but yes. Brad Wright OWNS me now. Your icon rocks. Qetesh is my evil hero.

Oh....man....what if Replicarter and Qetesh ever got together? *boom* the universe implodes. ;)

EEEEE!!!!

This is about as coherent as I get. But really, reset? WAY too fast and cheaty. Come on! This could have been solved, in my mind, by giving us about twenty seconds of Cam reaction.

On the other hand, SAM WAS HOT. This makes up for many, many flaws. Also, the boys were hot! And Ba'al was awesome! And Qetesh was cool--I only missed having Vala around a bit more. :-(

SO MANY FIC IDEAS.

I am so amused by how much the time travel and such broke your brain. I'm like, plot device? WHATEVER. THERE IS HOTNESS AND ANGST. They can have as many science handwaves as they want. Lol.

I wish we could somehow have a Vala and a Qetesh. Meep! (Quantum mirror fic? Hmmmmm?)

Usually I'm on board with the HOTNESS AND ANGST and handwaving. But time travel is speshul.

Plus, you totally got my random transition from OMG THE MOVIE to the movie wasn't totally awesome and they could have done so much better! Which was arbitrary and went away once I'd had sleep.

*grins*

YES! Quantum mirror fic!

Hahah. It's funny how much I can totally have these moments of seeing other people's ships and kinks, even when they aren't my own. I see things and am like, 'oh, that is *fantastic* for the Sam/Daniel people', or 'wow, the slashers are going to love that.' You guys are all such a good influence on me. There is LOVE everywhere!!! ;)

It's sort of third grade of me, but yeah, swearing!! You know they would have much dirtier potty mouths in the military. lol

Okay, yes to pretty much everything, but especially to this:

The characters were the stars of this show. Uttterly heart-breaking, lovely, insightful moments I will want to watch over and over again.

Also, I can't believe I forgot to mention the awesomeness that was Pilot!Sam in my own post of Continuum! I will clearly have to do a second post now.

And I get what you're saying about feeling cheated by the reset at the end. Part of me felt the same way, but there was a larger part - the one whose heart breaks EVERY SINGLE TIME she thinks about poor post-Unending Teal'c - that is glad that SG-1 doesn't have to deal with the weight of this, too.

As for Jack, I came up with what I feel is a reasonable explanation for the "Doofus Jack" issue (how much do I love the word doofus, and you for using it?) if you're interested. I suppose it could be considered handwaving, but it lets me retain my squee over RDA being on my screen. Oh, and you are totally right - the moment with Daniel was just perfect Jack. Loved it.

So, yes. I agree with you that overall, the movie was made of awesomesauce.

Now, I believe I saw that you posted fic. :)

*heads off to read*

Yeah, I read your post about Jack and I get what you're saying. I know I am probably being *way* too hard on him (he's my FAVORITE!!!!), and I agree with a lot of what you're saying. I could see Jack playing it that way, because it's Baal, so yeah, but it almost seemed like he was having a hard time getting the words out. Or maybe I just wanted some small sign of the darker things that might have been going on, but yeah, your explanation makes perfect sense. Sometimes I wish I was a wee less invested in him, because then I could just enjoy it. But, hell, what a ride Continuum was!! Damn, that is a fantastic movie, just like they mentioned in the commentary, it's like every great classic episode of Stargate smooshed into one. Just awesome. (And, for the record, Col. Jack knocked my socks off. :)

And YES to Teal'c. If Sam really had to live with those memories....*shudder* They are much better off with the reset. Especially my OTP. lol.

posted by [identity profile] annienau08.livejournal.com at 10:49pm on 31/07/2008
Oh, I completely understand your frustration. It's always harder when it's our favorite character.

Or maybe I just wanted some small sign of the darker things that might have been going on

Well, clearly the reason Sam and Jack weren't in that final shot was because it finally hit Jack that Ba'al was really dead and it was over and all the dark stuff came up and Sam had to drag him off somewhere for angsty comfort sex.

That's my interpretation, anyway. :) (And I agree, it would have been nice to see that on-screen. Maybe not the sex part...okay, the sex part, too.)

They are much better off with the reset. Especially my OTP. lol.

Yes! My poor babies just can't take anymore angst, dammit.
