You know how very occasionally you come across a fanvids that manages to completely encompass what you love about a particular fandom and from then on that song will never fail to remind you of that vid and that fandom? (Much like the way I can't hear The Blue Man Group's Rods and Cones without thinking of Rocketchick's uber Stargate SG-1 vid.) Now I can no longer hear OneRepublic's Marching On without thinking of Harry Potter and this awesome vid.

Speaking of Harry Potter, there is a mad non-canon ship comment ficathon going on over here. Lots of prompts and lots of great little snippets. Most of which are really more 'throw two characters in a room together' than real ship. My Luna love is in full effect. Here's some I recommend:

Seeing Things That Others Don't by [livejournal.com profile] alissabobissa  (Harry and Luna) I think Luna makes the best foil for Harry.

This Maze of Being by [livejournal.com profile] eleusis_walks  (Ginny and Tom Riddle) absolutely chilling

Unworthy by [livejournal.com profile] leigh_adams  (Severus Snape and Charity Burbage) Oh, Snape.

And not strictly from the commentathon but made of serious awesome, the fic I didn't even know I was waiting for all these years:

Knight in Dented Armor by [livejournal.com profile] igrockspock  (Draco and Luna) This is just awesome. It's set in the time Luna spent in the Malfoy's dungeon and encapsulates everything I love about both of these characters.

On the Stargate front:

Winners by [livejournal.com profile] penknife  (Jack, Daniel, Sam/Jack) Really great look at what 'winning' really feels like, and why it doesn't feel better.

the cold hard equation by [livejournal.com profile] blahnicity  (Sam, Daniel, Sam/Jack) This one will punch you in the gut. You have been forewarned.

Oh, and while I'm here, an awesome Sanctuary fic I've been meaning to mention:

Form and Function by [livejournal.com profile] penknife  (Henry) Read this for Henry, but also for all the other characters seen through his eyes. This one makes me ache for all of them and wish Ashley back So Hard.

Short but lovely look at Sam.

The [livejournal.com profile] redial_the_gate  project continues. I just caught a rerun of 'Paradise Lost' (scruffy Jack guuuuuuuuuuuh). Once I was done, of course, I was filled with a need for fic and went to the fanworks post for the ep at [livejournal.com profile] redial_the_gate . I was sad to see only three fics and all of them slash. I remedied this as best as I could. But boy am I still jonesing for a Sam and Teal'c fic for this ep. (You know, possibly with a nice side smidge of Sam/Jack. What? You like me because I'm predictable. ;)

Here's my list, got any more of any and all genres? (Go post them!)

Electrical Soul Wish by [livejournal.com profile] lyssie (Maybourne, Gen)
Delayed Reaction by JoJo (Sam/Jack)
Facing It by JoJo (Sam/Jack)
Meteorology for Beginners by [livejournal.com profile] nandamai (Sam/Jack)
Sentiments by Indie (Jack, Jack/Sara, Jack/Sam, Thera/Jonah, Kanan/Shallan)
Following Orders by Suz (Sam/Jack)
Thank You Seem to be the Hardest Words by Suz (Sam/Jack, Dr. Lee)

Can't Get Next To You by [livejournal.com profile] yahtzee63  (Fringe, Peter/Olivia, with various other background Alt!Olivia pairings)
This is a wonderful fic about Peter wandering the multiverse in search of his Olivia. There is lovely Peter/Olivia, but the real star of this amazing fic are the multiverses themselves, and the various incarnations of Olivia--recognizable, but slightly askew. And man, do I love each and every version of Olivia we are given, even as completely different as they are on the surface. Also read this for alt versions of Astrid, Walter, Broyles, and even John Scott. Wonderful idea exquisitely executed. A must read for Fringe fans.

walking on my skin again
by [livejournal.com profile] seimaisin  (Inception, Ariadne, Ariadne/Arthur)
What makes me love this fic more than anything else? That this is really an Ariadne fic first, about her friendships and relationships, but most importantly, how she finds her own place in the world. Excellent inclusion of Eames, Cobb, Yusef, and even Mal. (God, I love where Mal goes in this fic. Love like whoa.)

Your Contribution to the War Effort (A Mercenary's Guide) by [livejournal.com profile] threeguesses  (Star Wars, Han Solo, Han/Leia)
This fic is hilarious, touching, a bit bitter, and a lot wonderful. It follows an unusual format and style (the dreaded second person), but captures Han's self-deprecating wit so damn well as he chronicles his part in the rebellion. A must read.

Lonely Let The Flowers Grow by [livejournal.com profile] pumpkin_fics  (Harry Potter, Luna, Neville, Ginny, Luna/Neville)
I have a huge soft spot for Luna and for stories about what when on in Hogwarts while the Trio were away. This is resistance and friendship and Luna's ability to see the world in that unique way of hers.

Don't Say A Word
by seldear (SG-1, Jack, Mitchell, Dixon, Lam, Jack/Sam)
An interesting little later seasons AU where Jack is still commander of the SGC (and is involved in a not-so-secret affair with Sam), and the rest of the base watches as Jack struggles with SG-1 missing off world. I love the obvious and not obvious ways the base rallies around Jack, and how Jack never loses it, no matter how much he'd like to.

+The Great Porn Experiment of 2010 seems to finally be tapering off, thank god. (Damn you, porn battle!) I've started a third installment, but so far it is porn-free. Well, mostly. Lol. There's just all this...talking! I think the insanity has passed. Phew.

+[livejournal.com profile] het_reccers  is hosting their biannual Shipper Manifesto challenge this month. They are still accepting sign ups until the 20th! Basically you pick a pairing, write a blurb about why they are awesome, and then rec at least ten fics. I have snagged Sam/Jack and have been having a lot of fun coming up with recs and such. It's a great comm because it's the place to hit first when you have interest in a new pairing but don't even know where to start. (I still need a great Aliens Made Them Do It fic for my manifesto though. Suggestions?)

+There's great Food Makes Them Do It fic though in case you somehow missed it. Safe Distance by [livejournal.com profile] holdouttrout  Go read now! (Sam/Jack, Mature)

+I also read an awesome CJ Cregg runs for president with an all woman campaign team fic, but I have totally misplaced the link! Anyone? Here it is!

+Haven! I love Audrey Parker like whoa. Where is all the Audrey/Duke fic? They haz chemistry, yo. And I know this probably sounds funny coming from a ship whore like me, but I like the platonic partners relationships. Mary and Marshall on In Plain Sight used to be my favorite platonic partner couple until the show screwed that to hell. I am sure Audrey and Nathan won't last either. Lol.

+Watching Rizzoli and Isles and quite enjoying it. They are both such interesting characters!

+Saw Scott Pilgrim last night. I laughed so hard. It was really well done, but Wallace and Knives really stole the whole damn show. (Ok, time for Wallace taking Knives under his wing and taking over the world together fic.)

+Rented 'Dirty Pretty Things' last week. I mean, Chiwetel Ejiofor? I'd watch anything with him in it. Throw in Audrey Tautou, and an awesome performance by Sophie Okonedo? I mean, it was a weird movie, don't get me wrong. The whole thing was filmed like a tv commercial or something, with no music or cinematic scope, but it sort of fit the gritty subject of the underworld of illegal aliens in London. Plus, the line at the end makes the whole damn movie worth it: "How come I've never seen you people before?"  "Because we are the people you do not see. We are the ones who drive your cabs. We clean your rooms. And suck your cocks." I love it when a plan comes together.

+Finally saw the Harry Potter trailer. Holy mother of snark, is it November yet? What about now? (Wait, that would mean it was NaNo time. Eep!)

+Oh, oh, oh! And the fourth Lady Julia Grey book is coming out in October! *bounces* I haven't been excited and sitting around for a new book to be released in a while! Eeeeee!

Go read [livejournal.com profile] openended 's Waves are Universal right now. Seriously. Long, plotty, wonderfully written, great gritty, enjoyable post-apocalyptic AR, what more could you possibly want? Oh, and lovely Sam/Jack, of course. Did I mention that part? Set some time aside and enjoy!
annerb: (end of days)
+ Inception was...awesome. Great characters (the most important thing, no?) and interesting world. Go see it. And then read [livejournal.com profile] kellifer_fic 's little ficlet 'remember how you got here' (Ariadne with bits of Ariadne/Arthur). I swear, Kellifer is just incapable of getting a character voice wrong.

+ Diana on White Collar officially wins. The end.

+ I still think people should be more amused that I think seven pages can be considered a comment fic, than the fact that I wrote pr0n.

+ I still have Jason Bourne on the brain. Granted, he's one of my Top Ten Fictional Boyfriends, but still. (I think he needs to be moved up from #9. And Peter Bishop needs to be added in. Yes.) I've been reading Bourne fic. And strangely enough, back to Bourne/Marie fic rather than Bourne/Nicki. There really aren't a lot. Here are the ones I liked:

Survivor by .unique.curious.individual. (T, Marie-centric, Marie/Bourne)
She is Marie Helena Kreutz, and she is a survivor.

Breathe by fearlessfan (T, Marie/Bourne)
Filling in the space between.

+ Another random pairing I have had one the brain is Keller/McKay. I really like the idea of this pairing. I'm not sure I was wowed with the way the relationship was pulled off on the show (the least of which was SGA's complete inability to put Keller in a dress/costume that wasn't GOD AWFUL). Someday I'd really like to write my ultimate ode to this pairing as if could have been done, but I doubt I will ever get there. McKay/Keller fic that is light on the saccharine and heavy on the action/adventure is pretty hard to come by, but I'm still searching. I've rec'd Night Ops in the past, which I still love. I found another fic that is really a Keller fic with a lot of McKay in it and potential for more, but it's a great read that does Jennifer justice and really captures the cadence of their conversation. I really enjoyed it. (Yes, I am aware it was written for a genfest, but I see UST wherever I like, thank you very much. ;)

Figurative Hell and Literal High Water by [livejournal.com profile] tipper_green  (PG, Keller, McKay, Team)
Rodney's desperate to save his team, and Keller's just trying to keep up, on a planet where hurricanes can last for days.

+ You all need to go read [livejournal.com profile] holdouttrout 's Bait of Pleasure. Don't highlight the spoilers, just read it. Trust me. I can't say anything else without ruining it.

+ I may have pulled a loose thread on a 99.9% finished fic and unraveled the whole damn thing. *frantically tries to shove thread back in place*

and lastly....wait. WHAT?

IN THE NAME OF ALL THAT IS HOLY, WHY IS JOJO's FIC NO LONGER THERE??!!?!?!? This constitutes a fannish apocalypse of untold proportions, my friends. The end is nigh. But I'm not sure I want to live in a world without JoJo fic anyway. (This had better be a temporary glitch!)

annerb: (Miss Bingley)
Those of you who like Jane Austen but aren't fans of WIPs, the excellent fic on ffnet that I've been following is finally complete! Check it out! Anne de Bourgh in Bath by SwordSwallower17. (PG, Anne de Bourgh/OMC)

Honest When It Counts and it's sequel Conversations in a Holding Cell by [livejournal.com profile] lears_daughter . These are little Leverage/Lie To Me crossovers that are made of win. Gen.

Make a Deal With God by [livejournal.com profile] monroeslittle (Fringe, Peter/Olivia.)
The summary kind of says it all:
Alt!Livia doesn't like Gene, Walter only wants Peter to smile, that is not Ella's Aunt Liv, Elizabeth Bishop isn't going to pretend anymore, and somebody . . . somebody has to set the universes running right again and bring Olivia Dunham home.

An Act of Outright Stupidity by [livejournal.com profile] randombattlecry  (Pirates of the Caribbean, Jack/Elizabeth)
Short and perfect. Read it.

Safe in Magnetic Fields by [livejournal.com profile] openended  (SG-1, Sam/Jack, Alternative Realities)
Guy walks into the wrong reality, girl tries to get him home.
Angsty, real, and plausible, and oh so fascinating.
annerb: (SJ Close)
Fly by fic recs for what I've been reading lately.

A Tale Retold-At World's End by Laura H and Sal R (Pirate of the Caribbean, R, Jack/Elizabeth with various other pairings)
I'm not a huge Pirates fan, but I certainly loved the first two movies and surprisingly have a bit of a thing for Jack/Elizabeth. This epic fic takes all the characters from the movies, treats them all with interest and respect and conflict and gives them all a destiny and a part that makes sense. It is loooong, and wonderful and definitely pays off. I admit, the cahracterization of Elizabeth bugged me a bit in the beginning, but the author's evolve her so wonderfully and completely by the end that I totally forgave them. The story also treats Elizabeth/Will with respect and tenderness and believability and that is always a bonus to me when there is a love triangle. If you like Pirates and have an inkling for Jack/Elizabeth, you can't miss this epic, epic fic.
My biggest beef is that they didn't consistantly link from the end of one chapter to the beginning of the next, nor is there a comprehensive table of contents page or whatnot. So you have to dig through
this tag some.

Unlimited Minutes by [livejournal.com profile] artaxastra  (SG-1, R, Sam/Jack)
This is a lovely fic covering the evolution of Sam and Jack's relationship over the years through various phone calls they share over the years. It is subtle and believable and carefully characterized to show growth in their relationships and the individual characters. Definitely don't miss this one!

Unlahfulliche in Lyhte by [livejournal.com profile] pepper_field  (SG-1, R, Sam/Jack)
Oh, aliens made them do it at its best. The build up is magical. And the aftermath. And the frank conversations. I am sure you have all already read this, but in case you haven't: GO NOW.

v.2 by Suz (SG-1, PG-13, Sam/Jack)
An oldie but goodie that has been getting a lot of re-reading from me lately. Fantastic what-if for '2010'.

I've been thinking about how you can love a fic so much or just read it so much that eventually you become convinced that you actually saw it rather than read it. Or maybe it just feels so damn right it gets stuck in your head. Not just adopting them as personal fanon, but becoming certain they are canon. So here's a short list from me: Five Scenes I'm Convinced Happened in Canon.
