I’ve been doing a lot more broad fannish reading lately, skimming my way through various fandoms and pairings (mostly thanks to the awesomeness that is het_reccers ). Now, usually the thought of trying to read in a new fandom blind is enough to make me lie down until the impulse goes away, because facing The Pit or some such with no recs or point of reference can be a scary, scary thing. So I thought about writing a sort of a meme, to make it way less painful. Mainly, I just want to know everyone's absolute single favorite fic for all the pairings they've spent time reading. So, here we go.

The Meme: If someone was only ever going to read one fic for a particular pairing, which one would you want it to be? List your pairings and fandoms and pick one fic that you think could sell someone on the awesomesauce of your pairing. Then, list the pairings you would be curious/interested/eager to read a fic about that you just don’t know where to even start reading, and hopefully someone on your trusted flist will be able to provide a rec.

(Yes, I picked one Sam/Jack fic. And let me tell you, it was HARD. Plus, I had to, you know, read a bunch of my old favorites to choose. It is almost physically killing me to only put one. Lol. But in the end I picked one that had the angst, the stupid cute, and the resolution all tied into one.)

Also, do you ever read a fic that is so detailed and lengthy and well written that you have a hard time not thinking of it when you once again read/watch the original source material? This is normally one of the things I love about fanfic, but this rare time I have major issues with the fic that, while being ambitious and well written and solidly plotted, simply lacks characterization I can believe in, and creates a much darker background plot to the original that sort of undermines it, and throws the main protagonist in bad light. It's a really weird side effect to reading fic, and why i rarely read fanfic for books, I think. Though that's not strictly true, as I have read more published fanfic in the Pride&Prejudice fandom than you would believe. Lol. Anyway, it's just something weird that happened to me this last week. (And it totally was not a fic in any of my usual fandoms, this what I get for straying. ;)

Dear holdouttrout send me to watch scifi_tv_addict's 'Wake Up Call" which is an awesome, hilarious, well put together vid about Teal'c not particularly dealing well with other men touching his Sam and Vala. You gotta see it! So funny.

Delicate Dancing by weesta_fic (Leverage, Eliot, Sophie, Hardison/Parker)
Short little look into the dynamics of all these characters. Sophie observing Eliot with Hardison and Parker. Very fun.

Just a City Boy by anr (Glee, Finn/Rachel, Finn/Quinn)
I'm still wondering how I can be so excited about fanfic for a show that's only aired one ep. Lol. But this is a great fic, dealing with Finn's crazy, confusing, frightening, and yet somehow sweet relationship with Rachel. I just hope this show can live up to the fanfic it's inspired!

And if you are somehow still not reading mhalachaiswords' Physics of the Spin, why, I  ask you? WHY? The latest chapter, Pegasus Law of Disaster, has completely blown me away and made me fall in love with the story all over again as the author deals with the impact of the bigoted, cluster-fuck-waiting-to-happen insanity that is the American Military's 'Don't Ask Don't Tell' policy. (SGA/Gilmore Girls Crossover, some Rory/John)

Be a kind, thoughtful author and take the five seconds it requires to add a link to the next chapter at the bottom of each previous entry, pretty please? Otherwise the reader might not be arsed to search around your journal to find the next bit and give up trying to read it all together. Just a thought.

So, people, what's your glee these days? How is Project More Glee in 2009 going?

I keep telling myself to make a master fic rec list, but then I sit there for a little while and it's just an overwhelming prospect. Maybe I'll save that for when I need to procrastinate on my next ficathon. (Oh yes, you heard me. I'm signing up for the rarepairings ficathon even if it kills me. I'm a glutton for punishment!!!)  But, fic recs. Yes. This is why we are here.  Ahem. Just a few today.

More Than This by 6beforelunch  (SG-1, Daniel/Vala, Cam/Carolyn, Apocafic, PG-13)
Apocafic! Yay! And add this fic as another one of the few--Daniel/Vala that I believe. I love Vala's POV, the snippets of their lives post-Ori take over of Earth, and most of all, a Daniel who has lost his original team, and who is more than a little lost and angry about that. Wonderful.

The Greatest Exception by gabolange  (SG-1, Sam, Team, Jack/Sam, PG-13)
This is "Four Times Sam and Jack Didn't Get Married, and One Time They Did." While centering around the relationship of Sam and Jack, and the various permutations that could have happened, this is a Sam fic that highlights her relationship with all of the people in her life.  Great Cam, Vala, Teal'c, and Daniel voices as a bonus to an otherwise fulfilling fic that will make you cry and laugh and sigh with stupid cute appreciation. I am most impressed by how plausible each and every situation is.

Butterfly Kisses by annakarrennina  (SG-1, Sam, Jacob, Sam/Jack)
Because I have been in a 'Threads' mood lately, here is an oldie but goodie. *sigh* If only annaK still wrote for SG-1.

The Pants Chronicle by syxp  (SG-1, Sam/Jack)
The commentfic Queen strikes again. Drink warning on this one, folks. Don't read unless uncontrollable laughter won't get you in trouble. You've been warned.

A Time to Heal by wildcat88  (SGA, McKay/Keller)
Set during "The Last Man", this fic offers us the build up of Rodney and Jennifer's relationship that we didn't get in the ep.

How to Win Friends by scarletts_awry  (Leverage, Hardison, Nate, Team)
I love, love, love the Hardison voice in this fic. Everyone is at their absolute best. (omgalmostleveragetime!!!!!)

Like most I have reached terror level red with all the ficathons.  Why do I do this to myself?

Mostly, though, I have been suffering from major writing burnout.  Not too surprising, I guess, the way I was punching out a new chapter a week there for a while.  But, yeah. Burned. Out. (Just in time for the ficathons.)  What's interesting is that when I get burned out I walk away from fandom as a whole for a while (a very short while, granted), and then I wander back, and generally start reading voraciously again until I get to the point that I feel like writing again.  I actually read very little fanfic these days, never wandering outside my fabulous flist, but every once and a while I get in one of those great reading phases where I consume fic like no tomorrow. Some new stuff, but also a lot of revisiting old favorites.

A partial reading list of what has grabbed my attention this week. (All Sam/Jack)

Noticing by Claira.
This is classic team Sam/Jack UST at it's best. I love how this one short fic can ecapsulate so many of the things I love about this USTy pairing, and fits so well with the way I see them in my head.

Out Go The Lights by pepper_fieldI'm surprised I haven't read a hole in this fic yet. It doesn't matter how many times I read it, it always hits home for me. Sam and Jack and storage closets. What else could a fangirl need?

And one I hadn't read before, Let Go and Hold On by Rachel500, which is a long nice read about SG-1's final mission together and how quickly everything tumbles apart. Nice look at all the changes after season 8 and before season 9 and the political in-fighting and Landry adjusting to his new command. And, of course, Jack and Sam trying to get their stupid cute act together.

I also read a lot of other things I'd never read before, but...yeah. I'm trying to pretend I hadn't.

Oh, and a Leverage rec just for kicks.  We're All Mad Here by entangled_now. Gen. Short and sweet and totally awesome. (And why am I so hopelessly inlove with Eliot's view of everyone? I just am.)
