1. Everyone always called Janet Dr. Fraiser.  It occurred to me today on the drive to work that she probably should have been referred to as Major Fraiser, for as Sam has adamantly reminded people before, she should be referred to by her rank, not her title.  Medical doctors in the service don't go by 'Dr.' do they? (Yes, this *is* the sort of thing I think of on the commute.)

2. When someone is dialing a Stargate, at the other end there is no way to know where the wormhole is coming from, correct?  The ring doesn't spin on the receiving side, does it? And even if it did(Like the one time there was a incoming wormhole at the SGC and they showed it spinning to the Earth symbol for the last one, but the seventh chevron or point of origin wouldn't be Earth, since the wormhole originated from somewhere else. Or is the point of origin unique on each DHD and therefore the Earth symbol is just a place holder for the other unknown origin?)  Am I just thinking far too much about something I should just handwave? (Don't get me started on the graphic from the movie where they "track" the traveler through the "known" galaxy as if looking at the whole journey from a neutral 'out there somewhere' perspective. lol)

And yes, I am writing a fic, wondering if someone dialed the SGC for help, would the SGC be able to tell where they were if the off world person couldn't tell them?  Or would they have to be coherent enough to be able to transmit their position, as in give them the planet's address, so rescue teams could be sent?

3. I've had a pretty crappy week for many reasons (other than the glee of Indulgence that is, the one bright spot in my week).  In a fit of desperation to change my luck, I wore my kickiest outfit today, the one that never fails to make me feel awesome, centering around my kick ass knee-high brown boots from Florence.  I am a little in awe at the power a pair of stellar footwear has to cheer my mood.  Thank you, Boots of Wonder.  I think the sunshine and 75 degree weather helped, too.

4. Also, I know this makes me more than a little nutty, but this song is Sam and Jack.  I promise not to make you endure songfic.  But if I could vid, you bet your ass I would. :)

5. Argh. Why do lyrics sound so much more cheesy when you read them? I swear, #4 above was not meant to be cheesy.  You just have to listen to the actual song!  And...uh...pretend the word 'baby' isn't actually in the song. Oh, screw it. I'm taking #4 back.  I'm allowed to have some fandom secrets, right? ;)

6. I know I am unbearably picky and have more squicks than most sane people, but please, for the love of everything round and spin-y, do not have Jack and Sam use endearments EVERY SINGLE LINE of dialog for pages at a time, no matter who is around to hear it or not.  Especially not if it is 'babe,' 'honey,' and 'love.'  Of course, if Jack or Sam is doing this with evil intent to make the other absolutely batshit, then, by all means, proceed.

7. Apparently I am cranky.  Did I mention I no longer have TV? *kicks broken Direct TV receiver* Season finale of Project Runway, people.  *cries*

8. Now I am trying to think of what endearments I could see different characters use in various pairings.  Because as [personal profile] beanpot rightly pointed out, Cam would totally call Sam 'babe' and she probably wouldn't even kill him.  I bet there are some awesome ones Bra'tac uses on the ladies.

9. And that....pretty much is a glance into the inner workings of my mind at any given moment.

I probably should have cut this. Meh.

EDIT: [personal profile] syxp wrote me comment fic and is made of win.

1. Interesting. Is there any difference for if they are in the field or back at base or something? Hmmm...

2. That's what I was thinking too. Of course, that screws my fic. Lol. I should have left it unasked. Now I *have* to fix it. :)

Sorry to drag you through all of them. lol. I will try to think in fewer steps in the future. Heh.

1. I think it depends on whether they're in the field or not, maybe. Like when Janet goes offworld, they refer to her as Major, maybe... because then she's really in the chain of command. On base, she could be Doctor if she prefers, I think. I'm making this all up... so yeah. Hee.

2. I think the ring doesn't spin but the chevrons light up to let you know who's dialing in and where from, because in the Tok'ra part 2, Sam's dialing against the Jaffa coming in...

3. Yay boots! They sound awesome. I'm sorry your week is sucking, but at least the power of good footwear helped.

4&5. Embrace your love of songs that reflect your OTP!

6&7. Did you know there are two 7s? I'm addressing the second one, first... hee. Yes, to the no terms of endearment to Jack and Sam, unless it happens VERY rarely. Like once in the fic. And if it works... like the way you appease a crazy person by calling them something nice, which Jack might do if Sam scares him by tearing some household appliance apart. But it'd be funny. Even then... I dunno.

Cam might call Sam "babe" (but I don't think she'd like it all that much), but I really think he'd be a good Southern boy and go with "darlin'." Or "hon." I'm a Southern girl, and that's what I call my friends.

7. (The first one) Boo on no tv!!! That's really upsetting! *hugs*

8. I can't believe I replied to all of these. Hee.

1. Good point. I'm sure the show had enough consultants to get stuff like that right. *shrug*

2. I remember that in the ep, she knew someone had dialed in, but she didn't know who necessarily, right?

7. I figure for Jack and Sam, 'Carter' is pretty much an endearment anyway. :D And yes to Cam's southern boy charms (even though he is from Kansas. snerk)

8. I'm pretty impressed myself. :)

I've always thought this song (http://www.cowboylyrics.com/lyrics/harris-emmylou/hour-of-gold-6379.html) is my ultimate Sam/Jack song.

Maybe she's Doctor Frasier because that's the most important aspect of her job? She's CMO - whereas Sam is part of a team, doing the military thing about as much as she does the science thing. Rarely do we see Janet do anything non-medical.

I honestly want to make a community where people with no vidding skills can go and post their ideas for vids, and experienced vidders can make the vids and amateurs try their hand. Sometimes, when the right song comes on at the right moment, I can see the vid... but I have neither the skills nor the programs nor the patience. Just the idea.

I'm a civilian doctor, not military, but I've worked with a number of them, and have friends from medical school who've gone military. So, here's my take on your #1.

Military physicians are different than regular military personnel. They don't undergo the same kinds of training that regular military people do. They may even have limited knowledge of military protocol (my friend's army doctor hubby barely knew how to put the stuff on his uniform properly).

Plus, chain of command in medical facilities isn't based on rank. What I mean is, in a lot of hospitals, the more experienced nurses outrank the many of the doctors. Captains may be giving order to Colonels.

In contrast, Sam probably had to do all the normal miltiary training even though she's got a PhD. Sam's a soldier and Janet's not. Does that make sense?

Just my $.02 worth.

Obviously my knowledge on this is seriously lacking, I guess I was thinking service doctors could be trained in the military structure itself, but of course it would make sense that just go through normal civilian institutions.

This is very interesting and helpful. Thanks! :)

"Hey, babe."

"If you call me babe again, I'm going to castrate you with this zat gun." She picked up the zat and waved it around like she meant it.

Wow. Was that even possible? Jack supposed that if her aim was good she
could
just make his testicles vanish into thin air. Disturbing. But still... "So, honey, got that DHD fixed yet?" Heh. Sure he was risking some important body parts but her expression was so worth it.

"No." Carter paused. She was probably counting to ten. Very Zen. Or Feng Shui. Something. "Don't you have something more useful to do?"

He didn't really. The planet was uninhabited and the wildlife was completely uninteresting. Tasty, but uninteresting. "Nope. Not a thing." She'd been working on the DHD all day and Jack was feeling slightly ignored. Like a fruit cake three days after Christmas. "Wanna go back to the tent?" She was so never going to sleep with him again. Still, this was the most fun he'd had in the two weeks they'd been stuck on this rock. "Snookums?"

She cocked the zat.

Jack backed away with his hands out. "All right. I'll go."

He set the timer on his watch to go off in twenty minutes then changed it to thirty. Just in case. Harassing Carter was fun but he didn't want to push his luck. And he wasn't really in much of a hurry to leave. Being stranded with Carter was the best thing to happen to him since he took that stupid job in D.C.

Maybe he'd give her the parts he stole from the DHD tomorrow.

And maybe she wouldn't kill him.

Maybe.

1) Medical doctors can be referred to by their honorific, not rank. What probably happened with Janet is she became a medical doctor then joined the Air Force, and that automatically gave her the rank of captain/major. and it's recognized what sort of doctor she is by everyone calling her Doctor. Whereas with Sam, she joined the air force and did her PhD to progress to career officer.

If you want, I can check with a buddy of mine who works in the Army for the true facts :)

9) I like the way your mind works :)

Interesting! I guess I never realized the military training would be so different between a medical doctor and everyone else. Though that does make sense with the Hathor ep where Janet seemed rather "I've never used a gun."

Thanks so much!

1. I'm pretty sure you can almost always refer to doctors by their rank, or by Doctor. I think when you are not engaging them in conversation related to medical matters, they should be addressed by their ranks. And if the doctor in question is a general, the title should be General (the one rank that must always be acknowledged).

3. Shoes are love, baby.

4 and 5. Yay! I love songs that remind me of Sam and Jack. You are totally allowed to be inspired by that song!

7. It's just the "house visits" show - next week is the finale!

8. Oh, I think she would kill him. Or at least maim.

But I wanna see the house visits! I have to see what Chris came up with and who gets to go! Waaaaaah! There are so few shows with new eps at all these days that each one is precious to me.

I dunno, I just see Cam calling everyone babe. His go lucky charm. Heh. Now Teal'c....hmmmm

1) Hmmm....that's an interesting point. I guess I'm so used to M*A*S*H where most of the doctors tended to prefer "doctor" to their rank and Band of Brothers where the company medic was often called "doc" Somehow it makes sense to me. Maybe because I've spent my whole life around people with PhD's and almost never used "doctor" to refer to them, so it seems more likely to see medical doctors referred that way and...I'm babbling at you.

2) I thought they knew which planet was being dialed - but that might be a function of Sam's nifty computer set-up and not the 'gate system itself. It makes sense to me that that would be something built it - a caller ID thing.

3) yay boots

4) My first fanfic ever was an honest-to-god songfic. *hangs head in shame*

Endearments! Ack! What really gets me is when I find them heavily used in Jack/Daniel fics. Just...no.

Yay your mind. Inner workings are fun!

posted by [identity profile] annerbhp.livejournal.com at 04:15am on 28/02/2008
1) of course...and I'm going to show my ignorance here, but the docs on MASH weren't really there by choice and seemed to have very little use or interest in their ranks, right? I don't know if that makes a difference.

2)I'm still rather undecided... if there was a way too tell on the other side, wouldn't Atlantis risk giving away their address every time they went off world? Ouch. My head is beginning to ache. lol

4) Is sad fanfic still available to be read? Because, damn, that's gold.

I like how as crazy as that brain list was, there was a somewhat logical progression. Snerk.

I'm pretty sure they don't have caller id, but I feel there's fic in that. Something about Jack suggesting that caller id would be nifty. And Sam rolling her eyes at him.

YAY! for your boots. Good foot wear can make any frown turn upside down.

I think you have a reasonable amount of squicks. Endearments use with Sam and Jack, just makes me cringe. Carter and Sir are good enough for me.

How are able to survive without your TV? I saying prayers that your receiver will be fixed quickly, before bodily harm happens to people who tell you the outcomes of your shows.

And I think Cam, like President Grant, works for an example for any situation (and yes I've been watching wayyyyyy too much West Wing.)

and didn't you have something about songfic in here? OR am I just slowly losing my mind?

Yeah, I'm leaning that way. No caller id.

I have a lot more squicks I just never mention, trust me. :)

I have been TV-less since Monday. Very sad. But maybe this is the impetus needed to finally jump for the HD upgrade! (look at me, all silver lining now! You guys do good cheering up.)

No such thing as too much West Wing.

Songfic? Moi? Of course not. *runs away*

4. Ooh, if we're playing the whole "songs I would vid if I knew how to vid" game, my Sam/Jack nomination is Something to Do With My Hands by Her Space Holiday. And I'm not even much of a shipper; it just instantly brings that whole relationship to mind whenever it pops up on my mp3 player.

5. All non-comedy songs look stupid and cheesy written down. I think it's some kind of natural law. And why the majority of songfic is so awful. As a rule, songs do not work as poetry.

6. Jack O'Neill calling anyone "baby" (or just about any other pet name) is one of my immediate back-button triggers. I just can't take it seriously. I hear the character voices too well in my head, and just... no.

I'm sorry about your bad week. :(

#6. I hate, hate, hate the constant use of endearments in fic. I always have to wonder if the people who write those stories use that many endearments with their own partners? (Conversely, I wonder if the people who want to see no endearments in fanfic, ever, use them with their partners?) "Love" particularly galls me. I swear the only times I've witnessed the use of "love" as an endearment are from older Britons, and as often as not they use it with strangers. "Babe" just doesn't sound very Jack or very Sam.

Jack does call Sara "baby" in Cold Lazarus, when he hugs her at the hospital. So I can see it coming out naturally with Sam, too, though I can't see him using it often or in public. And I'm not convinced Sam would mind, in a fraught or tender moment.

I'm sure Bra'tac has learned alllll sorts of ways to woo the ladies in his 140? years, and makes good use of every one of them (the ways, not the ladies).

Most of my military medical knowledge consists of M*A*S*H so...LOL, but it seems others have answered the question. :-)

When someone is dialing a Stargate, at the other end there is no way to know where the wormhole is coming from, correct?

Correct.

The ring doesn't spin on the receiving side, does it?

To be honest, it depends on which Stargate prop footage they use. LOL. But I fanwank that the Stargate chevrons turning are the destination address on the destination 'gate. So you're watching someone from "out there" dialing your number...if you have a spinning gate. (As for why would the gate spin if the chevrons aren't established yet...handwave um....it's connected by that's the um..."phone ringing"?)

It wasn't the PR season finale. Next week is the season finale, this was the ep before the season finale. You did miss Tim's looksee of everyone in their "natural environment" which for three of them was NY. Rami has his own studio in...um, either LA or Vegas, I've forgotten. Christian and Jillian helped Chris and Rami respectively with getting their "three" looks ready for the final judging. Do you want to know more?

posted by [identity profile] annerbhp.livejournal.com at 06:38pm on 28/02/2008
Yes! Good point! How can the gate spin on the other side if the connection hasn't even been made yet? Thank you. That pretty much answers it, methinks. :)

I hate missing any eps of my shows, makes me cranky. Luckily they will probably show the house visits before the final again. *fingers crossed* And NO, thank you, I am going to try to remain unspoiled and hope my receiver spontaneously decides to start working again. Lol.

Thanks!

2. In season 4's 'The Other Side' they don't have the coordinates to the world trying to contact Earth until Alar transmits them. I'd say the SGC doesn't have a way to tell who's calling.
