Fic Rec

In case you missed it:

That Long Black Cloud by [livejournal.com profile] anr  (SG-1, Sam/Jack)
The gunshot echoes.
This is an alternate version of season 2's The Gatekeeper. Get ready to take a hit straight to the gut with this one. Gorgeous, raw, and definitely dark, and yet still fundamentally Sam and Jack.

(Also, [livejournal.com profile] holdouttrout  and I did an impromptu, yet inevitable, JoJo revisit the other day while talking about the mid-air porn fest over at Dreamwidth. This was as close as we could get when thinking of SJ fics: Two in One by JoJo. Yeah, you know the one. The descent pod fic. Mmmmm. I think we should have semi-official reading clubs of these old awesome fics wherein we squee over them together.)

Why is it the day that you are completely cut off from laptop and even paper and pen is inevitably the time a long stalled out fic suddenly comes to life in your head? Why is it that you spend the entire day with the PERFECT string of words circling endlessly in your brain (Omg, that was how this scene was supposed to go!), and you get home really really late, exhausted and almost dead to the world, crash into bed and then dream those perfect sequences over and over again. Then you wake up the next morning, open the languishing file, and EVERY WORD IS GONE.

You are a cruel mistress, Muse.

Thor

Saw Thor last night and was pleasantly surprised. Good mindless summer fun. Pretty funny actually too. But then I came home and found this fic, which, in the best tradition of fanfic, is even better:

It's Electrifying by waketosleep (Thor, Darcy, Clint Barton, Jane, Tony Stark, Bruce Banner, Darcy/Clint)
Clint Barton is apparently an Avenger and a pretty good shot, but whatever, Darcy has a taser and no reluctance to use it. Clint is the damaged one if he finds that charming.
Oh lord, where to begin? The Darcy voice is awesome and sarcastic and just so wonderful as she faces off against Clint and hulks and even Tony Stark. Love this fic to pieces. (The caveat is that beyond Ironman, I know nothing of the comics world, but still enjoyed the hell out of this.)

Writing Woes, TV, Mouth Breathers, Romance Novels, and Random Recs

Hey guys. I'm alive. Really. Just had some unexpectedly awesome things happen that have sort of temporarily taken over my life. Just one more week of insanity though, and things should settle in again. Writing has sort of fallen to the wayside, sadly. Not that I haven't been writing, just not writing effectively. The next chapter of my Ginny fic has demanded to be rewritten and taken unexpected turns three or four times in the last few weeks. It's being as slippery as a Slytherin. Snerk. I've also started and abandoned three or four ideas for my [livejournal.com profile] help_japan  charity fic. Oy. I tried poking at the next installment of the DC Series, but Daniel is being stubborn. (What else is new?) I've had a few other things open on my desktop, adding a few words here and there, but I'm not really settling to anything, sadly.

I just got a review on one of my oldest stories, which is nice. Really. Comments are always great. It's just... I do my absolute best to pretend I never wrote this particular fic, so the rare time someone leaves a comment, it gives rise to that urge to DELETE THE STORY FROM EXISTENCE yet again. All of you who never posted your first ever fic? I envy you SO MUCH. Lol.

I'm really behind on TV watching. I can't really build up any interest in the latest Sanctuary, though I imagine I will get around to it eventually. (I'm sorry. You all know how I feel about character bashing, but I just...can't make myself like Will. I'm trying. And another aside, I was commenting to holdouttrout the other day that I rewatched Star Trek Reboot again the other day and noticed that Chris Pine is a total mouth breather too, it just in no way bothers me the way it does with Will. I cannot explain this. Lol.) I saw Fringe, but don't really have any thoughts at the moment. Maybe later. It's a long hiatus to ruminate over. Looking forward to all the summer shows starting up again soon though. Yay White Collar and Covert Affairs and Leverage and other ones I am probably forgetting about.

Speaking of Leverage, I'm pretty broken up that Con-Con was canceled. Not surprised, just sad. I'd really been looking forward to that.

Seems there's gong to be a new Lady Julia Grey book coming out on June 21st. Let's hope it doesn't suck as much as the fourth one did. I'll give it a read and let you know if it's worth reading or if we should just continue to pretend there were only three Lady Julia books.

I've been reading throw away shitty romance novels. )

Here are a few fic recs to make up for it:

The Package Deal by [livejournal.com profile] ziparumpazoo  (Fringe, Peter/Olivia, Walter)
She drew these two men together and forced them, sometimes painfully, to build their own warped version of a family. They’re a package deal. An If/Then statement. It’s that simple.
This is a great morning after fic for 6B, showing Olivia's relationships with Peter, but also Walter, who is an inescapable part of the deal. Such a perfect glimpse into what life with the Bishops would be like.

The Bridal Path by Vyola (Addams Family, Wednesday/Joel)
To marry an Addams means taking marriage very seriously. After all, it is till death do you part. And even then, sometimes they come back.
Okay, so it's not like I'm this big Addam's Family fan or anything. I'm pretty sure I saw the movie a million years ago. But, god, I love Wednesday, the quirky worldview of the Addam's family, and their non-traditional romance. This is such a great little fic. Short, quirky, and definitely worth a read.

The Priming Game by amonitrate (Ironman, Rhodey, Tony, Tony/Pepper if you really squint)
Rhodey wonders if from now on it's going to be Tony Before and Tony After.
This is a fill in for the time between when Tony is rescued out of the desert and when he lands back in America. Rhodey's POV on the changes that have come over Tony, the secrets he is clearly keeping, and the suspicions of the US Government that threaten to push Tony over the edge. Such a clear vision of the characters and their relationships as well at the way Tony is changed by his experience.

Birthday Fic for Pepper! (Sam/Jack)

I am late, late, late, but I have to wish a happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] pepper_field . You are one of the kindest, funniest, smartest, most interesting people I know. Your stick figure art is legendary, your fic the absolute best there is, your cat almost as cute as mine, but most of all, the few days I have been privileged enough to hang out with you have been some of my best. Couldn’t love you more if I tried. Here is a small token of my affection. :)

Title: The Benefits of Having a Secret Transporter in Your Girlfriend’s Closet
Author: Annerb
Summary: Jack’s top five reasons he loves his secret alien transporter.
Categorization: Humor, fluff, silliness, tiny smidge of angst, Sam/Jack
Rating/Warnings: Teen. Little bit of naughty language.
A/N: Set in the cracky and utterly ridiculous realm of ‘Serendipity’. I believe I started this for a belated birthday gift for Pepper last year, but finally managed to finish it this year (a little belated yet again). I also sort of forgot that this universe was supposed to be post-Threads and so have miraculously brought Jacob back to life. Call it a birthday miracle. Lol.

Fic Recs (what else?) True Grit, Firefly, SG-1, Castle

Quite the mix of fandoms today!

A Long Time Traveling Away From Home by [livejournal.com profile] lindentree  (True Grit, Mattie/LaBoeuf)
Proverbs 16:18 - "Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall." Mattie has one version of events. LaBoeuf has quite another.
This is not your traditional love story, but for these two would you really expect anything less? Lovely story telling and pacing and just overall so true to the characters and the source material. Great read.

Fade Into Intention by [livejournal.com profile] brynnmck  (Firefly, Mal/Inara)
Sihnon had been a web of silk, delicate and intricate; Serenity is more like a well-worn blanket, rough and flawed and somehow all the more seductive for it.
I love Mal and Inara. They are just one of those pairings were it is so damn hard to find really good, true to characters fic. Well, wait no longer. This fic is absolutely perfect and achy and just beautiful. It encapsulates everything I love about these two.

for just one taste of this by [livejournal.com profile] cata_clysmiic  (SG-1, Sam/Jack)
After that, though, things got tricky and dangerous because they pushed a little more and went a little (a lot) further off that deep end, and soon it was the two of them alone in the empty barracks and this wasn’t wrong, was it, just sitting side by side in the darkness?
Hey guys, a new SJ author! Great little fic that really captures the long slow slide that is Jack and Sam, and how easy it might have been to lose their fight. Read and feed! We need more!

Weathervanes by [livejournal.com profile] openended  (SG-1, Sam/Jack)
what if things were different? Five snapshots from an alternate reality.
Nice glimpse at an AU version of Sam and Jack.

Synonymous by [livejournal.com profile] stars_like_dust  (SG-1, Jack, Sam/Jack)
The most he’d ever heard in a row was six.
This is an old one, but god, so good. Jack post-Abyss, and the ways he's affected by traumatic events.

And [livejournal.com profile] zinke  has written another installment of the Barnes & Noble Castle AU I rec'd before! Find it here.

Warnings: Older teens for adult themes (mentions of sexual assault, violence, underage sexuality and drinking)
A/N: Part of my ‘Five New Fandoms in 2011’ pledge. This lodged in my brain and grew from a Rewriting History prompt: Harry Potter, Ginny, she’s sorted into Slytherin. Ficcity Fic (and Evolution = Awesome)

I have been uploading my fic to AO3 over the last week or so. (63 down, all the scary multiple chapter ones left to go. Oh, gods, String Theory, you are going to kill me.) It has been fun to skim over old fics. Made me very nostaligic, and also kind of depressed, as I apparently used to be quite prolific. Now I am...not so much. Not sure what happened there. I did catch 'Evolution' on TV the other day and is this not the best SG ep of all time? I mean, SERIOUSLY. There is Bra'tac and Jacob and Reynolds and Burke and Dr. Lee, and the unholy trinity of awesomeness that is Hammond, Jacob, and Bra'tac all in one scene. And Jack backtalking to a Goa'uld, and Teal'c turning a Jaffa rebel, and Jack shooting a giant gun, speaking Spanish, and having BACKSTORY. And Daniel doing archeology Indiana Jones style and being all *yawn* about being kidnapped by guerrillas because, really, but also sweaty tortured Daniel and arm porn and attacking with a rock! Did I mention ZOMBIES? And the guide? ("Please, he owes me a lot of money.") And Sam in charge, and Jacob driving Sam insane, and the triple whump of Daniel, Sam, and Teal'c all bandaged by the end of the ep. And, OF COURSE, the old married couple dance of joy for Sam and Jack in this episode. Eye sex and lunch and smiles and needing a plan B. Could these two BE any cuter? (Makes you wonder if it was a last hurrah before they pulled 'Grace' on us and got Sam a boyfriend. Lol) Anyway, I am way digressing. Point: I've been a little nostalgic lately.

Here, have some fic recs (Sanctuary, Harry Potter, SGA, SG-1)

Displacement by [livejournal.com profile] freestyle_one  (Sanctuary, Kate, gen)
She didn't wear the dead girls' clothes.
Really interesting fic about Kate finding her place and navigating the hole left by Ashley.

The Interview by [livejournal.com profile] flyingcarpet  (Harry Potter, Pansy Parkinson, Ginny Weasley, Neville Longbottom, gen)
After the war, Pansy Parkinson did what she had to do to make amends. Six years later, she's still suffering the consequences.
Because I find the idea of redemption fascinating and I love that the author doesn't make Pansy a completely different person, just older.

A Significant Something by [livejournal.com profile] zeplum  (Stargate Atlantis, Lorne/Novak)
Oh yeah, they're the pride of Atlantis.
Gods, I love zeplum's Lorne so much, snarky, competent, and brave. And throw in the stupid cute that is Lindsey Novak and I am in heaven.

The Trick is to Keep Breathing by [livejournal.com profile] anr  (Stargate SG-1, Sam/Jack)
Ten loops Sam doesn't remember.
Sigh. Sam and Jack. You will always be number one. Great little snippets of Jack/Sam from Sam's POV during Window of Opportunity.

+ Female Character Trope Fest is going on over at Dreamwidth! Go leave some prompts. Can't wait to see what comes out of this one. Left a few prompts myself. Including a Chase one I am waiting for [livejournal.com profile] lyssie  or [livejournal.com profile] surreallis  to write for me. ;)

+ I watched the new Russell Crowe Robin Hood the other night. It was no where near as bad as I was lead to believe it would be. Not completely awesome either, but very interesting and not at all what I was expecting. But seeing Zipacna and Morris from ER as the merry men was endlessly fun.

+ Good fic to read:

The Story Needed Mending
by Mad_Maudlin (Sanctuary, Kate, Kate/Ashley)
Once upon a time there was a girl, and a ghost. Then it got complicated.
Absolutely great Kate voice. And everyone else too. I love the narrative structure. The best kind of ghost story. Go read it now.

To Dwell on Dreams by [livejournal.com profile] musamihi  (Harry Potter, Snape)
Six years after losing Lily, Severus has to let go all over again.
This is a pretty gut-wrenching and amazing fic about the lengths Snape goes to to keep from having to accept his loss.

Holy Powerful Women, Batgirl.

I just finished watching the miniseries Pillars of the Earth. (I have really meant to read the book over and over again, but being ill and tied to the couch and blessed with streaming netflix, I could no longer resist.) While the series over all had more blood and guts and rampant whoring than I would have liked, I was over all incredibly impressed with all of the women in this series. They were pretty much the ones standing up and doing things while the men stumbled about. Even the bad guys had a cast iron evil woman pulling more than her weight in the background. Pretty fricking cool. Definitely worth a watch. (Really makes me want to reread Penman's When Christ and His Saints Slept again.)

Some of the awesome women of Pillars:

The witch.

The Queen.

The daughter.

There are some boys in there too. (Finding Tom the Builder hot is not nearly as disturbing as finding Matthew MacFadyen hot as Brother Phillip. Whoops. I blame Mr. Darcy.) Oh, there's a cathedral too, of course. But mostly, AWESOME LADIES. Woot.

Happiest of birthdays to the dear [livejournal.com profile] katcorvi! I know you have been away from fandom for a while out of sheer necessity, but we still all miss you, including the Stupid Cute! *points up* I'm pretty sure we could easily come up with one hundred reasons we love you, Kat. After all, you are kind and hilarious and make grits like no one else. You have an asbestos brain that can withstand even the most virulent of badfic. Fic Recs: HP, Fringe, Castle, St. Trinian's

May the Moon and Sunlight Seem by Lizarel (Harry Potter, Hermione/Ron)
Because scars don't disappear just because darkness is defeated.
I have to admit that while I like Hermione/Ron just fine, I have never been much of a fan of the fic. This fic is the exception. It has true voices, a wonderful look at Ron and how he changes over the series of books, and lacks all of the smarmy, hysterionics popular in a lot of the teenage romance of the Harry Potter world. I really love this fic.

All Roads (Eventually) Lead to Home by [livejournal.com profile] igrockspock  (Harry Potter, Hermione, gen)
After the end of the war, Hermione goes to find her parents. They aren't where she expected them to be.
This is a nice look at Hermione dealing with her actions at the beginning of Deathly Hallows (and was there honestly a more wrenching scene in the first film than Hermione leaving her parents' home? Gah.

The Blood in Your Skin by [livejournal.com profile] anythingbutgrey  (Fringe, altLivia/Lincoln)
Ten things that may or may not have happened to Lincoln and Olivia. This is what leads Lincoln to kiss her the first time they almost die together. Lincoln thinks this is romantic. Olivia laughs in his face.
Oh, this fic. So wonderful. And painful. But definitely worth reading. (Warning: character death)

Five Things That Never Happened to Nikki Heat...and One That Did Happen to Kate Beckett by [livejournal.com profile] fialka  (Castle, Nikki/Rook, Beckett/Castle, NC-17 for smut)
Sometimes, even Castle needs a fic fix. Meta AU.
Hot and awesome. I love the way Nikki Heat and Rook are different characters, and yet a tiny bit not. Definite must read.

Mama Who Bore Me by language_escapes (Saint Trinian's)
Ten stories about eleven St. Trinian's girls and the women who shaped them.
This is set in a specific version of this universe by this author that I love. (Having Chosen, So Defined). I think this fic even manages to blow that one out of the water. You know, even if you have never seen the St. Trinian movies, I think you really might enjoy this fic. It's about daughters and mothers and the paths we chose in this life. It's lovely and powerful, and way better than the original movies themselves which are amusingly bad, but make up for it in the idea they put forth.
