TV Talk. Spoilers.

WTF, Eureka? )

Leverage! )

I'm still three or four eps behind on Burn Notice and the fact that I can't work up the energy to watch them is scaring me. Oh, Burn Notice. What has happened to you this season?

So have we decided that Rizzoli and Isles is not worth an attempt? Boo!

I is dork.

+It's possible I just made myself cry while writing a scene. *breaks out the tissues*

+Summer is a lifetime away! Damn you, Leverage! You make me love you with your awesomeness and brilliance and joy and TEAM=DYSFUNCTIONAL FAMILY OF DOOM, and then leave me to live without you for months on end? WHY?

+Getting bored of Olympics. I *never* get bored of Olympics. What is wrong with me? Hm. Maybe I'd rather be watching Burn Notice. Must get hands on season 2 DVDs.

+I've started saving up Lost episodes rather than watching them as they air. That show is way too annoying to watch in one hour increments. I can appreciate it's awesomeness better in five hour chunks. (Why don't we watch all TV on DVDs instead?)

+Mmmm. Girl scout cookies. I think I'll even forgive them for the high fructose corn syrup. Just this once. *throws thin mints in the freezer*

+What in the world has happened to In Plain Sight, Eureka, Royal Pains, and Lie To Me? Dear network ptb, Making me wait a year between seasons makes me start to forget exactly why I love your show and get distracted by new shiny. Please to be adopting a predictable, regular schedule, m'kay?

+I've been watching White Collar and generally enjoying it. But there is something bugging me about it, like I feel embarrassed about liking it. Can't quite put my finger on it yet, but I'm sure it will seem embarrassingly obvious once I wrap my mind around it.

+If you're into Austen and don't mind WIPs, I'm following a fun fic over at the Pit. Miss de Bourgh in Bath. Darcy's poor cousin Anne de Bourgh leaves Rosings and finally gets her chance to actually, you know, live. Great slow awakening, and gentle evolution of Anne's decidedly warped view of the world when she finally gets to step out of Lady Catherine's dominant shadow. I'm not an expert on historical details of this period, but this fic seems to miss the major pitfalls of most Austen-era romances. At least so far!

+Speaking of Austen, nothing bothers me more than fanfic that hyper-sexualizes this period. I mean, sex between married people, whatever. (Say, Mr. Darcy Takes a Wife) But having Darcy and Elizabeth running around making out in shrubbery when they aren't even engaged, let alone married? No. (I'm looking at you, Abigail Reynolds and your Pemberley Variations.) For me the pull of Austen is the subtlety. The tension drawn so tight and subtle in glances and word play and dances and the flick of the fan. The capacity for minsunderstandings and constraints of propriety and the inability to just be able to say, "Hey, wait. I like you. A lot. Let's go out on a date." There's a place for smut, but I so appreciate the slow burn. So that when one tiny kiss or hand hold at the end finally happens, man do you feel like they've earned it.

Leverage and Fanfic

For anyone not reading the Kung Fu Monkey blog, you might be interested in this snippet from the latest post. A fan asked:

"@619: I personally HATE fanfic so I was wondering..... 1)How do YOU feel about fan fiction? 2)Does it irk you that so many people "borrow" your characters and use them in their own crappy stories? 3)Do you think of fanfic as a form of flattery? 4)Do the other writers and the actors feel the same way?"

John Rogers' answer is interesting, particularly since he has made little to no effort to hide his awareness of online fandom in general.

Copied and pasted so you don't have to dig through the long post... )

Interesting. At once sort of very common sense, but also sort of...snide about us people wasting our time and over-inflating ourselves instead of actually doing something real (and up, apparently). But the core is really here: We write for different reasons. Very much yes. Some might argue fanfic, writing done for nothing more than personal pleasure, might be more pure because of lack of interest in profit, etc. Or I could just be over-rationalizing. Heh. Because if there is one thing true of fanfic vs. original writing, it's that there is little to no risk in fanfic writing, where silence is often the most harsh criticism you will hear. And even then, no one begrudges your right to post whatever you want.

Birthdays, recs, and fanfic side effects.

Happiest of birthdays to my fellow ship whore [livejournal.com profile] binkii822, the lovely [profile] a_loquita, and [livejournal.com profile] beanpot, who insures I am never without interesting links, lovely fic, and proof that puppies make all the bad in the world go away. I hope you all have a great day!

++

While I'm here, how about some fic recs? Not to be missed:

[personal profile] aurora_novarum  wrote Leverage/SG-1 crossover fic! 'Wargames' Didn't Play Out Like This. Hardison gets an unexpected close encounter with Area 52. Just so much fun. Tag to "The Three Days of the Hunter Job"

A Hand to Hold by [livejournal.com profile] jedibuttercup  (Eureka, Jack/Tess)
The first Jack/Tess fic I've managed to find, and it's short, but lovely. Tag to "Ship Happens"

Then, lucky us, there is birthday fic that we all get to enjoy!
Dimensionless Quantities by [livejournal.com profile] mrspollifax  (SG-1, Sam/Jack, adult)
A beautiful look into what it takes to be the one waiting to see if the other one is going to make it home this time. Tag to SGA's "The Return"

++

Also, do you ever read a fic that is so detailed and lengthy and well written that you have a hard time not thinking of it when you once again read/watch the original source material? This is normally one of the things I love about fanfic, but this rare time I have major issues with the fic that, while being ambitious and well written and solidly plotted, simply lacks characterization I can believe in, and creates a much darker background plot to the original that sort of undermines it, and throws the main protagonist in bad light. It's a really weird side effect to reading fic, and why i rarely read fanfic for books, I think. Though that's not strictly true, as I have read more published fanfic in the Pride&Prejudice fandom than you would believe. Lol. Anyway, it's just something weird that happened to me this last week. (And it totally was not a fic in any of my usual fandoms, this what I get for straying. ;)

Things to keep you entertained...

Dear [livejournal.com profile] holdouttrout send me to watch [personal profile] scifi_tv_addict's 'Wake Up Call" which is an awesome, hilarious, well put together vid about Teal'c not particularly dealing well with other men touching his Sam and Vala. You gotta see it! So funny.

++

How about some fic recs?

Delicate Dancing by [profile] weesta_fic (Leverage, Eliot, Sophie, Hardison/Parker)
Short little look into the dynamics of all these characters. Sophie observing Eliot with Hardison and Parker. Very fun.

Just a City Boy by [livejournal.com profile] anr (Glee, Finn/Rachel, Finn/Quinn)
I'm still wondering how I can be so excited about fanfic for a show that's only aired one ep. Lol. But this is a great fic, dealing with Finn's crazy, confusing, frightening, and yet somehow sweet relationship with Rachel. I just hope this show can live up to the fanfic it's inspired!

And if you are somehow still not reading [livejournal.com profile] mhalachaiswords' Physics of the Spin, why, I  ask you? WHY? The latest chapter, Pegasus Law of Disaster, has completely blown me away and made me fall in love with the story all over again as the author deals with the impact of the bigoted, cluster-fuck-waiting-to-happen insanity that is the American Military's 'Don't Ask Don't Tell' policy. (SGA/Gilmore Girls Crossover, some Rory/John)

++

[personal profile] aurora_novarum pointed out this awesome online comic, and the more I read, the more I  feel like I am watching my own geek life! Haha.

++

I'm also enjoying reading through John Roger's posts on Kung Fu Monkey blog, lots of behind the scenes Leverage goodness!

++

Oh, and random PSA  to the universe? Stories posted to LJ in multiple parts? Be a kind, thoughtful author and take the five seconds it requires to add a link to the next chapter at the bottom of each previous entry, pretty please? Otherwise the reader might not be arsed to search around your journal to find the next bit and give up trying to read it all together. Just a thought.

++

So, people, what's your glee these days? How is Project More Glee in 2009 going?
annerb: (Murray-Not Impressed)

Random fannish thoughts are random.

PEOPLE. There was only one Sam/Jack fic posted to LJ over the last week. And it was a chapter of a WIP. I mean, as much as I appreciate my debrief tagging job being so easy, I'd really rather have a crap load of FIC. (Hey, turn your pointed stares somewhere else, those hurt!)

In related news, I should never have mentioned that I was working on the next installment of the DC Series. I haven't written a single word on it since that day. You think I would have learned by now. Which is why I won't mention that I've been working on something else--D'OH.

I've noticed a distinct difference in my Stargate reading habits vs. my Leverage reading habits. In Stargate, I have always turned to fic to read what I don't get on the show, primarily shippy stuff. I didn't really want anymore episode, team type stuff, because I got that on the show, right?  Yet, with Leverage, I don't really have any interest in purely shippy fic, because that ship is getting in the way of my team! I just want more show, more teamy, dorky, cheesey, have no sense of personal space team fic. I don't want angst, or introspective stuff. I just want MY TEAM, people!  Which is sort of strange for me and certainly a change.

In other news, I have been watching the commentaries on Leverage season 1 DVDS... )

My LOCI obsession seems to have died a quick and inexplicable death. I'm still scratching my head over that one. I feel like I must have taken a wrong turn somewhere.

And I finally saw the Harry Potter movie and have once again found myself reading a lot of HP fic.  Highlights:
And the Clock Ticks by Lirazel (Molly Weasley, beautiful angst)
Multiplicity by Lirazel (Trio, gen)
sweet and half forgotten by She's a Star (Harry/Ginny, missing scene from DH)
Harry Potter and the Insert Title Here by opalish (Harry/Ginny, CRACK, humor)

That's all from my schizo fannish brain. Laters.

Fic Recs: SG-1, SGA, Leverage

I keep telling myself to make a master fic rec list, but then I sit there for a little while and it's just an overwhelming prospect. Maybe I'll save that for when I need to procrastinate on my next ficathon. (Oh yes, you heard me. I'm signing up for the rarepairings ficathon even if it kills me. I'm a glutton for punishment!!!)  But, fic recs. Yes. This is why we are here.  Ahem. Just a few today.

More Than This by [livejournal.com profile] 6beforelunch  (SG-1, Daniel/Vala, Cam/Carolyn, Apocafic, PG-13)
Apocafic! Yay! And add this fic as another one of the few--Daniel/Vala that I believe. I love Vala's POV, the snippets of their lives post-Ori take over of Earth, and most of all, a Daniel who has lost his original team, and who is more than a little lost and angry about that. Wonderful.

The Greatest Exception by [livejournal.com profile] gabolange  (SG-1, Sam, Team, Jack/Sam, PG-13)
This is "Four Times Sam and Jack Didn't Get Married, and One Time They Did." While centering around the relationship of Sam and Jack, and the various permutations that could have happened, this is a Sam fic that highlights her relationship with all of the people in her life.  Great Cam, Vala, Teal'c, and Daniel voices as a bonus to an otherwise fulfilling fic that will make you cry and laugh and sigh with stupid cute appreciation. I am most impressed by how plausible each and every situation is.

Butterfly Kisses by [livejournal.com profile] annakarrennina  (SG-1, Sam, Jacob, Sam/Jack)
Because I have been in a 'Threads' mood lately, here is an oldie but goodie. *sigh* If only annaK still wrote for SG-1.

The Pants Chronicle by [livejournal.com profile] syxp  (SG-1, Sam/Jack)
The commentfic Queen strikes again. Drink warning on this one, folks. Don't read unless uncontrollable laughter won't get you in trouble. You've been warned.

A Time to Heal by [livejournal.com profile] wildcat88  (SGA, McKay/Keller)
Set during "The Last Man", this fic offers us the build up of Rodney and Jennifer's relationship that we didn't get in the ep.

How to Win Friends by [personal profile] scarletts_awry  (Leverage, Hardison, Nate, Team)
I love, love, love the Hardison voice in this fic. Everyone is at their absolute best. (omgalmostleveragetime!!!!!)

eta: I've also updated the clicheathon masterlist of commentfics. Be sure to check them all out!

Things That Suck

+Writer's block.
+The teevee seasons all drawing to a close.
+94% finished fics that refuse to just finish themselves.
+People at my job who try to make their problems my fault and won't take no for an answer (or STFU, sadly).
+Ficathon guilt that keeps me from writing anything else, even when I have stories demanding to be written.
+108 degrees? REALLY?
+Not being able to leave comments in posts because they want me to go to dreamwidth to do it instead.
+Twitter.
+July and Leverage are too far away.
+ABC (YES, YOU HEARD ME ABC. THERE IS A SPECIAL RING OF HELL FOR PEOPLE LIKE YOU.)
+The fact that my black widow curse has hit yet another teevee show. (And just for the record, I wasn't watching TSCC, so you can't blame that one on me. Even though I agree, that sucks.)
+No more Delahoy.

RIP, Unusuals. You deserved better than my curse.

Okay, and because as cynical and bitchy as I am, I feel guilty leaving nothing but suckage behind to leak into the internets, a few things that don't suck:

Leverage Fics:
We're all Mad Here by [info]entangled_now  (Team, gen)
Falling by [info]ijemanja  (Parker, Sophie, gen)
The Birthday Party Job by [info]asimaiyat  (Hardison, tiny smidge Hardison/Parker)

SGA Fics:
As a Tree Grows by [info]poisontaster  (Katie Brown, gen)

SG-1 Fics:
Like Coming Home by [livejournal.com profile] featherjean  (Sam Carter, Sam/Jack, Team)
Theory of Flight by [livejournal.com profile] lyssie  (Sam/Jack)
Build Your Walls, I'll Tear Them Down Brick By Brick by [livejournal.com profile] kellifer  (Daniel/Vala)

And, completely out of character, but how about an original short story by one of my favorite authors?
Salem by Robert Olen Butler
(God, I wish I could write like this man.)

Reading List

Like most I have reached terror level red with all the ficathons.  Why do I do this to myself?

Mostly, though, I have been suffering from major writing burnout.  Not too surprising, I guess, the way I was punching out a new chapter a week there for a while.  But, yeah. Burned. Out. (Just in time for the ficathons.)  What's interesting is that when I get burned out I walk away from fandom as a whole for a while (a very short while, granted), and then I wander back, and generally start reading voraciously again until I get to the point that I feel like writing again.  I actually read very little fanfic these days, never wandering outside my fabulous flist, but every once and a while I get in one of those great reading phases where I consume fic like no tomorrow. Some new stuff, but also a lot of revisiting old favorites.

A partial reading list of what has grabbed my attention this week. (All Sam/Jack)

Noticing by Claira.
This is classic team Sam/Jack UST at it's best. I love how this one short fic can ecapsulate so many of the things I love about this USTy pairing, and fits so well with the way I see them in my head.

Out Go The Lights by [profile] pepper_fieldI'm surprised I haven't read a hole in this fic yet. It doesn't matter how many times I read it, it always hits home for me. Sam and Jack and storage closets. What else could a fangirl need?

And one I hadn't read before, Let Go and Hold On by Rachel500, which is a long nice read about SG-1's final mission together and how quickly everything tumbles apart. Nice look at all the changes after season 8 and before season 9 and the political in-fighting and Landry adjusting to his new command. And, of course, Jack and Sam trying to get their stupid cute act together.

I also read a lot of other things I'd never read before, but...yeah. I'm trying to pretend I hadn't.

Oh, and a Leverage rec just for kicks.  We're All Mad Here by [personal profile] entangled_now. Gen. Short and sweet and totally awesome. (And why am I so hopelessly inlove with Eliot's view of everyone? I just am.)

Leverage Fic Rec

Leverage fans! Run, do not walk, to read this fic:

The Green Light Job by [livejournal.com profile] halcyon_shift
Eliot's going behind bars, Parker wants snacks, Hardison isn't helping, Sophie smells fear and Nate just wants a drink...

Longish fic that feels like you are watching an ep. Fantastic points of view from all the characters, quirky, sarcastic fun, and our team at their absolute best: driving each other completely insane and loving every second of it.

Leverage Fic Recs

The Underwire Job by [livejournal.com profile] brown_betty  (Hardison/Parker)
Parker decides she wants to have sex with Hardison, so what does she do? Enlists the incredibly reluctant Eliot as her expert. Together they turn it into a job that is absolutely hilarious. Parker is pitch perfect and the Eliot POV is just out of this world wonderful. Hilarious and stupendous all around.

Sometimes by [livejournal.com profile] circadienne  (Hardison/Parker)
Parker dates sometimes. Short, sweet, and the last line just nails it. Great Parker voice.

Dear Leverage-

We have only known each other three short weeks, but I think this is love.  You seem to be the pinnacle of campy good fun, team of win, good bad guys, and witty reparte.  I'll even forgive the emo childhood back stories.  Let me apologize in advance if my love causes you to get prematurely canceled as has been known to happen to others before you.

All my love,
